how much commission should you pay on a private car sale?

What's the right amount? 10%, 5%, 2% ?
Should both the seller and buyer pay something or just the seller?
Most auction houses charge a selling and buying fee of at least 10% and some are 20%.
What do you think is a fair deal?

What am I missing? If it's a private sale (you sell a car to me) who are we paying a commission to?

OK. Maybe I stated the question incorrectly.

By private sale sale, I mean not at auction or advertised in a newspaper or on the net.

Someone finds a car for me. How much commission should I pay the guy? Should the seller and the buyer both pay something, or just the seller?

It does not matter who gets the money, what does matter is how much you are willing to pay out for a car including tax, title, brokerage commission, sales commission, transportation costs, preparation fees, etc...

It comes down, as they say, to the Bottom Line...

It is an odd question. My best friend and I find cars for each other all the time; no commissions, just helping each other out. If this is a third party who found you a car, why don't you just ask him what he'd like to get out of helping you out? They you can guess what he really wants and it ought to be anywhere from a bottle of booze to a dinner out to a couple hundred bucks.

If you do not have a agree upon figure before hand then it's a steak dinner or whatever you think.

Depends how much it cost the third party and how much did it save you? How much could the third party have made if they bought and sold the car to a 4th party? It would be a situation by situation kind of thing. How much is the third party worth to you? Just tell him to jump off a bridge ... and make him walk to the bridge while you drive off in your new ride.
