How much thrust?

How much horsepower would it take to reverse the rotation of the Earth?

This seems to get very complicated very quickly. I was thinking more of stopping the axial rotation rather than the orbital rotation, but either way there is a bunch of hp involved.

How much force would it take to stop the rotation of the Earth? : science

Chuck Norris would only have to threaten a kick and the Earth would reverse its rotation out of sheer terror.

I am not even sure if it could be calculated. To overcome the inertia of that much mass is going to be stagering. Then there is no way to apply the power required other than another body of some mass acting against it in reverse rotation.

Come to think of it I have never looked for the information of what enables the continued basically same speed rotation to continue. There has to be a major extenal force or there is so much original inertia to overcome with time as to be unbelievable. Yet if that is the case the earth will eventually stop turning some day.

The actual drag against a space enviroment might be almost neglishable. So the question then becomes what got the spinning rotation going initially.

When the gyroscopic effect on the mass is reduced beyond a certain point the earth may become unstable. These events may be so far in the future as to be measured in millions of years.

I have always thought that mankind abuses his privilage of being here and takes it far too much for granted. We should at least be aware that cognizantly we have no other options. It is also very reasonable to believe that the earth will not support the human race at some point. Specis have been extinguished over time already.

My 240D would do it if I pointed it to the East and floored it from a stop. Of course I'd have to be at the Equator and with good traction for best results.

I think it took superman 100s of high speed orbits to reverse it in the movie, it was hard to tell the exact number, he was just a blurr from that camara angle.

Archimedes just used a lever

This is easy.

The USS Starship Enterprise could do that with a tractor beam and a well timed jump to warp factor 8. Also with Chuck Norris at the helm.

A couple launches facing east in this ride should do it. 738 ft/lb torque

Q: [analyzing the cause for the Bre'el IV moon's trajectory] This is obviously the result of a large celestial object passing through at near right angles to the plane of the star system. Probably a black hole.
Lt. Cmdr. Data: Can you recommend a way to counter the effect?
Q: Simple. Change the gravitational constant of the universe.
