Andy Rooney passes
Let's have a moment of silence for the man. I suspect the majority of us have enjoyed some of his commentary.

Wow. Can't help but wonder what would have happened had he kept working?
He was a curmudgeon among curmudgeons. RIP Mr. Rooney.

Some of my earliest television memories include Mr. Rooney on 60 Minutes. Give 'em hell where ever you land next, Andy.

When I was a child, dad would always watch "60 Minutes" on Sunday. When you grew up having only one television, and dad controlled it, you were stuck watching it instead of "The Muppet Show".
As a child, I always looked forward to the end of the show, BECAUSE Andy came on. He would make you think about the most mundane things in life, things we took for granted. I think we've lost the last in journalism that was part of the Greatest Generation.

The first Andy Rooney story I ever read was in an issue of Harper's from, I think, 1944.
It was a story about how hard it was to get a story. There had been a report of a German sub in New York harbor. He was trying to run it down and all he was getting was a bunch of 'Yes, it's true but you did not hear that from me' from every member of the military he spoke to. So he wrote a story about 'Did you ever wonder about how hard it is to get a real answer from someone who is not ever going to give you one?' Rooney had just come back from France where he had gone in with the D-Day crowd. He made it clear in his story that the truth of the landing would never come out until long after the war because it would be too hard for those with loved ones that were there to understand. But he also thought that when the folks back home saw the things he had seen but could not talk about they would understand that no matter how terrible D-Day had been it had been worth it. |

We thought it was a big deal when we finally got a tv with a remote control. Thankfully, we got three channels - nbc, abc and cbs. It was always on 60 minutes on Sunday evening.

Andy was a nice guy...
I had the opportunity to work at the CBS Broadcast HQ for 5 years (524 W 57th St Manhattan) and saw Andy all the time. He was always good for a few words in the elevator and when he met my Dad they were swapping WW2 experiences within 5 minutes. (Andy was in the 8th AAF for a while as was my Dad before he went to the 9th AAF 107th Photo recon group).
Andy was the kind of guy who never thought he was better than anyone else and that put him head and shoulders above 99% of the network folks at CBS. Morley Safer was an old friend of my Uncle Neil and I had lunch with them when uncle Neil came to the States for a visit. (Neil was a veteran of BBC Radio World Service as a reporter and also wrote for The Economist. He knew Morley from the BBC). When the conversation got around to Andy Rooney, Morley said that Andy was the most level headed guy he knew in Journalism. Nothing phased him, except 9-11. Morley said that the day after 9-11 he found Andy in his office trying to write his copy for the Sunday 60 Minutes show and he was bawling his eyes out as he typed. That says it all to me. God Love 'Ya Andy |
