What should NCAA do to Penn State?

I wonder what sort of authority the NCAA has to punish Penn State for the Sandusky/Paterno debacle. This is not the usual sort of thing that gets athletic programs in trouble, thank God. Do their rules provide for a penalty in this situation? If so, the penalty should be severe. If not, then they need to look at their rules.

If this had to happen, I'm glad it happened at Penn State. If it can happen there, it can happen just about anywhere. This should be a major wake up call for the knuckleheads that are running big-time college athletics.

What jurisdiction would the NCAA have with this case? It has nothing to do with the athletic department. These are criminal charges perpetuated by a criminal. Penn State is doing what is in their power by firing everyone connected with the cover-up.

They do need to do an in-depth investigation, supply the courts with all of their findings and refuse legal support to all involved.

I don't know.

I think it has a whole lot to do with the athletic department. For one thing, didn't Sandusky continue to use Penn State facilities for his boys' camps after Paterno knew about the rape? And why the hell is the graduate assistant who witnessed the rape still on their staff? I'm not saying that I know all the facts, but what has been made public seems sufficient for the NCAA to at least investigate. Their investigation should wait until the criminal process gets further along, but I would hope that they would be empowered to address this sort of thing. It goes to the core of what the NCAA claims is its mission.

There's not a whole lot the NCAA can do other than making them Bowl ineligible for X amount of time and pulling scholarships. If for some reason the NCAA doesn't disqualify from Bowl play, Penn State should decline any invitation.

The NCAA has a "code of conduct" authority, which is why they are "sitting back" while the official PA investigation continues. If there's a violation of conduct, the NCAA can sanction the athletic program of member schools.

Looks to me like they have already, as a group, had punishment enough. IF there are any individuals that COULD have prevented one of these gay child molestations and did NOT act, they should be punished to the maximum extent of the law.

Had to insert "gay" in there didn't you? You must think about it a lot...and As if "straight" molestations were fine and dandy. Anyways, the NCAA won't do a damn thing to psu. NCAA is a corporation and does everything for money - psu is a huge school bringing in enormous revenue, the NCAA would be shooting themselves in the foot.

The NCAA is not shy about taking money for sanctions, since they have to avoid the appearance of favoritism to all the other schools that have sanctioned for lesser offenses.

Okay since it hasn't been quoted yet I will change it to suit you.

Yes, I DO believe that a gay molestation is more damaging than a heterosexual one. That said, NO molestation of a child in any way or form is at all acceptable!

Additionally, I heard about a boy that this sicky took to San Antonio with him. WHAT parent with two brain cells to rub together would allow such a thing? I would have to know someone REALLY well, before I would allow them to travel with my child. I would have to be COMPLETELY convinced that they would not do anything inappropriate and would supervise them properly.

Such a parent must be brain dead!

Is part of the mission to do the "Double Jeopardy" thing? It almost sound to me like you want them to be punished once in criminal court and yet again by the NCAA.

More akin to a civil penalty for violating their relationship with the NCAA than "double jeopardy."

But still a "double jeopardy" in essence but called a different name to make ourselves feel better. Kinda like with Rodney King. Can't get them this way, get them the other way or like with OJ who was freed in one court but hounded in another? IOW, we violate the SPIRIT of the law but follow the LETTER of the law? Or perhaps you prefer the colloquial way of saying it? "We play until I win"?

No, there have always been distinctions between criminal liability and civil liability and contractural disputes. I'm not sure what your point is.

I agree with that, except for the "almost" part. You also left out the part where the victims punish them in civil court. And once the authorities in Pennsylvania and Texas get done with them, I hope the feds can come up with some charges of their own.

BTW, none of that would constitute double jeopardy.

My point is that they are being handled by the police now. Why do we need to further kick them down? Just as with Koon, he was tried and set free in on one charge in state court and because of the riots, was charged in FEDERAL court. In theory, his rights were not violated but in reality, we both know it is the same issue over again.

Like I said, it seems like we want to punish PSU again and again. Isn't the current judgment and civil lawsuits proceeding enough?
