In praise of the w140 S class

I recently had the opportunity to drive a 94 S320 for some extended interstate travel and I'll have to say that that was probably one of the best rides I have had the pleasure of driving. I could drive one of those for hours and enjoy every minute. Personally, I don't think the new ones can hold a candle to the ride/comfort of a nice w140 but that is just me.

I agree, they are very impressive cars. Unfortunately too large and heavy to fit my needs.

They are interstate (or autobahn) cruisers.

they do have an interesting style, blocky, heavy, stately etc. i've only driven my old w126, and a couple w126 "loaners" from my then-mechanic, but i can imagine that they hold the road very well, and are extremely powerful. but, as i am sure you know, the consensus - here, and.. probably everywhere? - is that they were overengineered to keep up with lexus, often to their detriment. (evaporator, wiring harness, electronics etc. ) but, they still catch my eye, and i have considered buying one... even though i know better. especially an sl600? ()

They are pretty awesome cruisers.

You should try on a W211 E-Class. My E55 is a fantastic long distance cruiser. Plenty of power, and damn comfortable. Airmatic is a pretty nice feature - it irons out the bumps of the road in Comfort, but handles damn well when you put it into DC Sports 2. It does not quite have the finesse of a sports car, but is VERY well composed when you toss it into corners.

The E55 feels at home doing 100+ mph cruises. Dead stable and silent at those speeds.

You know, Mercedes mechanics have joked for years that you can take any random 140 off the streets and find 1000$ of needed repairs on the spot. Not complaining though, keeps me fed.

Where do you find legal places to do this, on public streets and roads, here in California?

At this point in their lives.............the number is probably closer to $2500...........if you consider both parts and labor.

I agree 100% with you, however as you can see some of the people of this forum are in a hurry to argue with everybody and everything. They've already told you how much money you need to keep one of this fantastic cars on the road and the funny part is that NO ONE of them actualy own one One other point is that this car was introduced 20 years ago and still hold its place on the road like no other car....but as you said this is just me
Everybody is happy just to be negative and full of "smart" comments.

I would be happy if I were to purchase, at a premium, a nice one owner W140 and it only needed $2,500 in repairs. I've been studying the W140 market because I plan to purchase one soon. I'd like to have an S600, but an S500 will do nicely.

If I may offer some opinion...go for the S500. Over the last 15 years I've owned 4 of the W140 and the 500 is the best one. I still own one (see photo bellow) got it in 2004 with 42000 miles now is at 96K and over the last 11 years it cost me in repair just under 3500 all together including parts. For the pleasure, build quality, ride and road presense this is a very small price to pay. Find one well looked after and you will never look back. Good luck.

w140

Yesterday afternoon I got mom to sit in the one that I'm performing the service on and she liked comfort of the front seats alot. Just to show dad what was out there I sent him the link to the car shown above. He told me to buy it for him. I told him that I would not buy it without looking at it so I may run up there over the next day or two.

The one I'm on has been being used regularly for the past 4 years without anything other than oil/filter changes. Complaint is running badly (missing on a couple cylinders) and the check engine light is on. All the systems were loaded with faults that I proceeded to clear to allow it to start over during the next few days. The missing is being caused by the oil seepage from the cam cover seals that circle the spark plug holes. Couple plugs were covered with oil. Nothing major.

Except my neighbors 1999 S320. 35K miles. Never leaves his garage. Seats still look new and not a single scratch or ding. That car will be in his family for the rest of its life.
