cooktop wiring question

I'm replacing a cooktop with a used cooktop. The wiring is shared with a wall oven. The wall and oven have 4 wires - red, white, black and bare. The outgoing cooktop has 3 wires - red, white and black. The incoming cooktop has 3 wires - red, black and bare. Shoul I wire the bare wire from the incoming cooktop to the bare wire from the wall or the white wire from the wall?

Thanks,
Sixto

The incoming cooktop is missing a white wire. Is there a wiring sticker on the new cooktop?

Not necessarily -- especially if it doesn't have any electronics like a clock, it may just take 240V for the burners and not have a neutral leg for 120V between it and one of the hots. Pure 240V devices do exist.

If there's no white wire:
* Red to red (hot #1)
* Black to black (hot #2)
* Bare to bare (ground)

Good point. I am (possibly) corrected.

No sticker. It works with red, black and bare hooked up.

Thanks!
