I think at that time it was global cooling. IIRC, my parents generation grew up thinking the world would be an ice box by this time.

EVERYWHERE???

You''ve been EVERYWHERE and analyzed ALL public school systems.

A ridiculous comment on your part.

Of course I haven't been eveywhere. But in my area - many public schools system offer a quailty education to children. Your comment blatantly states there's no hope for the system anywhere.

You continually refer to the good ole days. Times have changed; I'm not saying it's all good, but not everything going on in todays primary educational environment is bad.

Fair enough. Lets look at the school rankings in the worldwide scene, shall we? How do you think we compare there? Got a link? How have our students been rated again? Somewhere in the middle, IIRC. NOWHERE NEAR the top, AFAIK but that was a few years back when I saw that report. Perhaps you have a more recent ranking?

World education rankings: which country does best at reading, maths and science? | News | guardian.co.uk

Edit: My bad. 14th out of 34 in reading. 25th in Math. 17th in science. What an achievement

Could be worse.

I highly recommend a book called Black Rednecks and White Liberals to anyone with an interest in the history and current state of education. The author is Thomas Sowell.

I would agree that not everything is bad. Unfortunately, the brain washing, spoiling and liberal propogandizing offsets it.

Aklim! There you go again muddling their minds with facts. They had such a good story going too!

I would be interested in seeing some actual examples of your so called liberal propaganda.

I don't know if anyone was arguing that we were the best in the world at anything. I'm not too surprised at the results in that link, seems about right.

What's your point? That if we look at the "silver lining" life is good and we don't have to do anything else? All those "could be worse" is little more than comforting platitudes for those too weak to handle the truth.

Not sure what the significance of it is but the fact is that when it comes to reading, math and science, all HIGHLY IMPORTANT things in the world, WE SUCK. IF we don't get better at the critical areas, we are going to be left further and further behind. It is that simple.

I will say we seem pretty good at tossing money at an issue. Not as much ROI from what I can see.
