With the potential purchase of a 59 Jaguar, I am looking for a decent Jag forum to start trolling. I've got a few weeks to get some research done, and make sure I get to do a good PPI on it. Jag Lovers seems to suck, and I've seen another forum that was dedicated to the newer cars.

Well done. Is it a MKII?

X2 on Jag-Lovers...great site. I haven't joined there yet, but I stop in from time to time when I need to learn about my dad's '68 XKE. I started the long process of restoring it a few years ago, before he passed away. Since then, it means more to me.

...as if owning a used Benz isn't bad enough. LOL

Going from older mercedes to older jags as a daily driver is not like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. It actually is doing it. . Older jag is a sunday driver in my opinion.

How many Jag owners responded so far? :)

My 2001 XJR was absolutely flawless to run. Drove it back from Florida too.

My goal when it's time to replace the 97 E420 (or convince the GF to sell her 2010 Civic, go back to school and drive it instead) is to get a 2005+ XJR in black with black leather.

It looks like the 2004+ XJs have depreciated themselves into oblivion (like all 4 door jags do). With a proper coil spring swap it looks like quite the bargain.

I'd rather have the 2003 personally. The next gen still looks good, just a bit chubbier and I would prefer to avoid air ride.

My '85 500SL seems to like $2000 thrown at it every year to stay top notch and I don't drive it more than 1,000 miles annually. I've been saying for years that I'm running out of things to fix, it hasn't happened yet.

No, generally speaking a Benz can be kept on the road for a fraction of the money required to do the same with a Jag. Again this is a GENERAL statement. The best Jag can probably win out over the worst Benz.

After reading Tyler's post it reminded me to point out that I am talking about the older cars. Jag quality control improved alot in the last 12 or 15 years. Ford did them a lot of good.

I recently sold my '99 X308 vanden plas. As far as Jags go, it was incredibly reliable. No major breakdowns, rarely more than 500/yr spent on stuff. In cabin electrics were beginning to get a bit wonky, as was the paint.

I'd stay away (still) from jags from the '70s. I had an XJ12C that almost bankrupted me in the early '80s. It was like dating a beautiful woman with a horrible drug habit: almost always something was wrong...

I have two of those (XJ12C's) and they've both been modified. The red car has a small block chevy, mated to a 700R4 and the silver car has been converted to run strictly on propane. It's also mated to a 700R4 so all of the Lucas D-Jet is gone.

I'm probably going to sell the red car and keep the v12. I also have a 78 sedan that I originally bought as a parts car but will probably try to put back on the road.

The XJ12 would compete with the 6.3 and 6.9 in it's day. Today, they would probably need the same kind of owner in order to keep them going.

The rear suspension on these cars is impressive, even by today's standards and the 4 piston calipers on the front are huge even when compared to a 560.

Jaguar suffered from forward planning issues in the 60's and 70's which lead to industrial action and resulted in a lot of cars suffering from build quality problems. If you find one in good condition today, it's likely that all of that stuff has been gone through.

My brother, living in England, is a Jag nut. He used to own a real nice looking Aubergine (kind of deep purply maroon color) 1988 or thereabouts XJ. Like all things Jag it slowly sort of just deteriorated into a nice looking immobile sculpture. Eventually had to have it towed away. Good luck. You'll need that much more than with a Benz :D
