Mercedes manager from Germany arrested in Alabama

EarthLink - U.S. News

Well Deputy Barney Fife decided that a MB Exec in Tuscaloosa needs a USA drivers license in Alabama.

Do you think MB is gonna donate any vehicles to the 'Bama cops, now?

"Papers please, citizen. Schnell! Schnell!"

We should have let the South go in 1860. Not to say that it's a good idea to drive without a license, legal or illegal.

Driving around without a license is generally not a good idea.

I'm just dealing with a sort of similar situation in LA. My friends girlfriend was driving my buddies car with him as a passenger; they got in a small fender bender on the freeway and the CHP got involved. Her license was expired and my friend didn't had his license with him so they impounded the car. They told him the car would be impounded for 30 days before they would release it to him. Fortunately we got it out after 4 days and $500 in impound and towing costs later.

His girlfriend had to get a temporary license and she had to bring two people with here with a valid drivers license to get the car out of the tow yard. Because they released the car before 30 days that if the owner of the car, my friend would let an unlicensed driver drive his car again they will confiscate his car indefinitely.

So make sure when you let someone else drive your car his license is valid.

You'd think a big shot world traveled MB exec. would have a bit more sense.

Not a good idea at all. I have one of my workers who is a rebel type and has not had a drivers license in 2 years. That finally caught up to him. He was arrested and now I have one less worker and its too bad because he does great work and is loyal. The damn fool just refuses to have a drivers license because he told me "It violated my constitutional rights "

OTOH it would certainly be easy enough to do by accident.

The article in our local paper said it was using a law targeted for illegal immigrants. This is getting a lot of attention because of that link, I believe.

Unintended consequences....

The CEO of MBUSA was basically fired last month due to expense account misbehavior after repeated warnings. More sense does not necessarily come with executive titles it seems.

Not a question of sense -- I've left my wallet in my hotel room by accident. Barney Fife's behavior here was a gross over-reaction.

Hard to top this one.
A few years ago while down here for the GP Lewis Hamilton got booked for doing burnouts in a MB he had been lent by MB Australia. The car was confiscated & Lewis had a court date. Some how the whole thing was swept under the carpet with Lewis/MB making a donation to a road safety charity. The car was impounded for some days, I guess some MB exec had to take the bus for a while.

Drivers license are an interesting thing. Normally if you are visiting a friendly country, your home country license is all you need. Over here you can get an international license if you wish to be on the safe side.

Ha now this is to funny, a law made to persecute Mexicans nabs someone they really don't want to mess with. A Mercedes big wig, and Mercedes butters a lot of peoples bread in Alabama.

Oops, now that's embarrassing. I bet there is an unwritten rule going around not to mess with these guys for this nonsense anymore.

I wonder what the German embassy has to say about this? I wouldn't think they would be to pleased about their citizens getting hassled by Barney Fife.
