Hard to top this one.
A few years ago while down here for the GP Lewis Hamilton got booked for doing burnouts in a MB he had been lent by MB Australia. The car was confiscated & Lewis had a court date. Some how the whole thing was swept under the carpet with Lewis/MB making a donation to a road safety charity. The car was impounded for some days, I guess some MB exec had to take the bus for a while.

Drivers license are an interesting thing. Normally if you are visiting a friendly country, your home country license is all you need. Over here you can get an international license if you wish to be on the safe side.

When I was in OZ back in the late 90's, all I had to present was my US Drivers License (the shelia at the rental counter saw it was a New york license and said"You should be able to handle Aussie traffic, just remember stay to the left").
Here in the US it depends on the state. Cali and NYC are OK with your foreign license but you are charged a higher rate of insurance if you are from certain countries (Russia for one) and you have an identifiable local address , but Chinese licenses are NG.

Remember the 5 Porsche reps pulled over in Montana?

Oops, now that's embarrassing. I bet there is an unwritten rule going around not to mess with these guys for this nonsense anymore.

I wonder what the German embassy has to say about this? I wouldn't think they would be to pleased about their citizens getting hassled by Barney Fife.

A number of years ago a grioup of 5 Porsche reps were pulled over by the Montana State Police when they were clocked doing 160 mph running nose to tail on I-90. At the time Montana did not have an Interstate and County road Maximum speed Limit, just a statement that maximum speed was "subject to local conditions as determined by the Montana State Police".
This and another incident with an Italian driving a Ferrarri at 220 mph prompted Montana to set their Max speed at 75 mph, but I would still see folks cruising at 90.

Montana State Troopers began to distribute bumper stickers that said "Yes Mario, Montana does have a Speed Limit!"

Charges Dropped

While Tuscaloosa police arrested the man last week for not having proper citizenship documents while driving a rental car in the city, city attorney Tim Nunnally said in an email the charge was dismissed after the man later provided the documents in municipal court.

from the article:

One newspaper cited the executive’s arrest in urging Mercedes to move to Missouri from Alabama.
“Our state has many advantages over Alabama. We are the Show-Me State, not the ‘Show me your papers’ state,’” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote in an editorial.

Other states will now be courting Mercedes Benz to move the factory. We will see every incentive possible given to Mercedes to pack up and move to another less hostile environment. This traffic stop may prove to be very expensive for the great state of Alabama.
