Groceries increasing in price...
I know, it's an article written in June, but after my grocery run with my wife, I nearly had a heart attack when the total was displayed.
Inflation hits grocery volumes | News | Retail Week We went looking for mainly meat and canned goods, as our dry good selection is nicely stocked. A one pound chub of 85/15 ground beef at Aldi used to run us $1.89 a little over a year ago, is now $2.89. Canned green beans and corn that used to run $0.45 now sells at $0.59. Bacon, which I used to get at $1.99 is now $2.99 for the cheaper stuff. We generally buy in bulk, like we did this time, 2 cases of each canned vegetable, a dozen or so pounds of bacon, 20 pounds of ground beef, etc. I knew that the prices were going up, but this is nuts!! It's a good thing I've already marked out and started preparing the dirt for the garden next season...looks like it's going to save us a ton of money. Time to teach the wife how to can foods. I've also talked with a farmer here, and for a small fee, he'll feed and care for a young bull for meat for us. I already have my hunting licenses this year for PA and OH. We own land in southern Ohio with a nice sized hunting lodge, etc. My brothers and I already have a week slated to go hunting there. I'm hoping I can get a few doe this year and fill up my other freezer. Feeding 3 growing teenagers isn't cheap, and it looks like it's only going to get worse.

Thanks to Ben Bernanke, counterfeiter in chief. Glad that the Republicans are going fascist on him.

Luckily, I have half of a lot that I bought when I bought the house.
My neighbors and I are talking about forming a trust and buy some of the run down properties and empty lots and planting neighborhood gardens for the benefit of the entire neighborhood. Fence them in, and offer people the opportunity to harvest if they promise to help plant, weed and water the plants. Those that refuse to work the gardens will be given the ability to purchase food from us at a discount.

As a child, we were on welfare for about a year while dad recovered from a major back surgery...I know what government cheese and butter tastes like. I also know the shame my dad felt, accepting help from others without working for it. I also know the shame I felt in 3rd grade, handing the lunch lady my weekly free lunch slip instead of money. After that bleak period as a kid, my dad vowed to never allow us to go through it again, and kept a years supply of dry and canned goods at all times. I'm not at that level just yet, but I'm damned close. Every so often, the wife I go shopping together to fill our shelving units. I've calculated recently that we have about 3 months of food...it was a much higher number of months when it was just the wife and I. My goal is to have at least 18 months worth in the house. I hope to hit that goal by spring, summer at the latest. I just rotated my stock, pulling about 3 cases of canned good for the kids to take to school for the food drives. Soups, fruits, vegetables and the like will go to needy families through the schools.

I put up a thread a couple of months ago regarding how Hellmanns mayo is now $4.99 for a quart jar...............
Nobody was outraged by it.............in fact, most were outright dismissive as if I haven't been paying attention. So, I conclude that these people, the majority, have taken it in stride........................... |

Prices are going up. A box of Kraft Mac n cheese was not a $1.59 6 months ago. It was probably 1.19 or so. But that is at Publix,a chain down here. At super target it's about $1.29

I can remember when a box of Mac & Cheese was 4 for a dollar. I'm sure Mr. JP can remember that also.

I remember being able to buy chicken at $0.39 a pound for leg quarters about 5 years ago...no such luck now. There's only a few things that I demand be name brand. Hellman's Mayo, Jiff peanut butter, Folger's coffee, and Nabisco saltines and Philadelphia cream chese are the few items that come to mind. My milk and butter comes from a local farm, as does my eggs. Aldi's, thank God, has come up in quality over the last 20 years. In the beginning, I couldn't stomach thinking of eating their soups or other canned good. Now their soups are better than Campbell's and their canned vegetables are as good as the national store brands. They have decent fresh and frozen meats, and, if you go on the right day, their fresh vegetables and fruits are pretty good too.

In the normal course of events, when do prices ever do anything but go up?

Watching for the longer term trend with inflation. I cannot see wages going lockstep with it this time if excessive. . Short term price increases are to be expected and can be dealt with. They do not disrupt too much.
Entrenched long term heavy inflation to me is the potential danger. Normally inflation remains subdued somewhat in sluggish economic periods. This time around it could be different. Only time will tell. Yes the cost of puttting food on the table has made some noticeable headway in Canada as well. Always in the background though is that north americans pay less percentagewise of their incomes for foodstuffs than the vast majority of the world. |

By any sane definition, Mac n "cheese" is not food, so you'll be ok with the increasing cost of groceries.
