German Mercedes manager arrested in Alabama

Quote:
Alabama's strict immigration laws have helped land a Mercedes-Benz executive in jail. The Associated Press reports that an unnamed Mercedes executive was arrested after being pulled over for a routine traffic stop.

The arrest came after the 46-year-old exec was unable to produce any identification other than his German ID card. The executive was pulled over because his rental car reportedly did not have any tags, but he was later released after an associate was able to present his passport for inspection. Mercedes-Benz spokesperson Felyicia Jerald called the incident "unfortunate," and added that the incident was resolved once a colleague was able to produce a driver's license.

When Alabama Governor Robert Bentley heard of the executive's arrest, he reportedly contacted State Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier to get details. We're guessing that doesn't happen when most other immigration arrests in Alabama, but Mercedes-Benz has a substantial footprint in the state. Mercedes has built vehicles in Tuscaloosa since 1993, and the facility currently produces the ML, R-Class and GL.

Good thing MB has friends in high places otherwise the police state could be a real drag on the bottom line.

Why would you say that? He is just enforcing the law.

Alabama is one of the poorest states (houses with DIRT for floors - that's broke) and should be happy to have the Mercedes factory within it's borders.; when Alabama law enforcement encounters a mercedes benz exec, they should roll out the red carpet NOT make an arrest.

They'll figure it out soon enough......

In Alabama, this thread would be arrested for reposting.

Perhaps they will hassle enough Mercedes Benz executives into making the executive decision to relocate the manufacturing plant from Alabama to Germany.

So you're saying Alabama law should only be enforced on poor people? What if he was a manager at a Mexican corporation doing business in the state? What if he was just a low level employee? Where do you draw the line exactly?

So your thesis is that if you wear a 3 piece suit or drive an expensive car, you should be allowed to pass and if not, pull you over?

This whole thing is a CF, in my opinion.

1. WHY no license plates on the RENTAL CAR?

2. In Germany people must carry Ausweiss AND Fuhrschein. ID and Driver's license. WHY NO PASSPORT? why no driver license in German?

3. Why did DB let this guy come to the US w/o an international driving license? It takes 30 minutes to get on in the City hall in Moehringen, where the DB headquarters is. I used to pass by the place daily.

ALL THREE ARE AT FAULT.

The guy should be ticketed for no ID, the rental car company should be ticketed for no plates and the plant should get a strongly-worded letter from the DMV telling it like it is:
Just follow the same law you would follow in Germany. Nothing more.

Curiously, no one mentioned insurance proof, probably because it was a rental car.

Enough blame to go around.

I don't believe in falling all over the MB people, even if they do provide jobs. They got tax breaks up the magiggy for being there, they can follow the same rules they would follow in South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic etc etc etc.

Alabama and Germany have full driver's license reciprocity. A German license is fine for driving in Alabama, provided you have the presence of mind to have it on you while you're driving.

The scary thing is that an American can drive in Germany for up to six months on an American license.

There are several business savvy states who watch these news reports like hawks. They will soon be courting mercedes into moving their plant from Alabama to a more business friendly environment.

This is not about being business friendly. This is about giving someone a pass just because they have a bankroll. Perhaps if it were large enough a bankroll we can excuse murder? Just to be business friendly?

I don't advocate that, but it has happened before.

From time to time, yes. But like I said, it has little to do with being business friendly where it means we have to let everything go and if we don't it isn't being business friendly.
