that Titanic Tourist Sub ....

If they are still alive and the thing is still intact it must be getting pretty nasty in that tube. I am guessing catastrophic failure is what happened. Other wise there had to be some sort of back up/independent power that could have been used for communication.

I read that it normally pings the ship every 15 minutes and that stopped an hour and 45 min into the dive. So it’s got to be either total power failure or the hull was breached and it imploded. Hard to see a good outcome here.

Actually I think communications stopped then, but the ping went on for 5 more hours. Like an airplane black box after an incident?

Now they hear sounds ... 24 hours of O2 left. I wonder if they got too close to the wreck and got caught up in it?

These guys here paint a bleak picture of the company involved in this incident:

https://www.npr.org/2023/06/21/1183408455/titan-missing-submarine-oceangate-submersible

Quote:
Experts from within and outside OceanGate raised concerns about the safety of its Titan submersible as far back as 2018, years before it went missing during a deep-sea dive to the Titanic shipwreck site.

"Most of the companies in this industry that are building submersibles and deep submersibles follow a fairly well-established framework of certification and verification and oversight, through classification societies," he said. "And that was at the root of OceanGate's project, is that they were going to go solo, going without that type of official oversight, and that brought a lot of concerns."

There is much of that sort of talk coming out of the woodwork now. That never gets to the clients in time. The CEO is in that tube, so he prolly thought it was OK. Or he was willing to risk it for the $.

Sounds like that search sub found some wreckage on the bottom near the Titanic. Game over. RIP

Last I heard, acoustic mics detected what they thought was an implosion near where the sub was suspected to be according to the USN. Wreckage was discovered about 1,600 ft from the Titanic.

If it was an implosion at depth, they did not suffer. From what I understand, an implosion at that depth would be so quick, they brain would not even have time to think "OH phk".

I find it highly unusual for this type of accident to occur. It would seem to me a straight engineering project not likely to ever fail. I suspect someone might go to jail over it.

Considering (from what I have read, YMMV, grain of salt etc) thr sub was not built to certifications and multiple engineers have come out to express their discontent (some of whom were fired for it)...I think there is a lot to it. I could see some negligence charges?

I'd be keenly interested in seeing what the wall thickness and material of construction of the "pressure vessel" was.

Also need to consider that any flaws in the manufacturing process of the pressure vessel will be exponentially magnified at depth. Look what happened to the Thresher in '63

Given that the captain went down with the ship, I don't know what legal recourse would be available at this point.

Another issue is the potential materials fatigue caused by exposing a vessel to varying degrees of expansion/contraction caused by significant changes in external pressure experienced over the course of its use. Who was checking for this, and what detection methods were employed? Is it easy to detect materials fatigue in a layered material like carbon fiber?
