electing officials via the internet - what do ya'll think?

presidential candidate

I think it would be a good way to do it. If the US elected a president this way would it help to limit the number of WalMart shoppers that vote? Just think, the most popular dude on youtube could be prez.

Dubyagee 11-27-2011 01:02 PM

Would NEVER work.

The Better (Than That)solution

Empty out ALL the Jails and make the Former Inmates our elected officials.
('Could not possibly be any worse than the group of Crooks in office now.)

Larry Peterson is a Hack for the Morris Media Empire.
And you can't get any more right wing nut, unless you're talking one of Murdoch's Rags.

Mike Murrell 11-27-2011 08:11 PM

Eliminates any concern over misaligned "chads".

But......

The same party that had people voting twice that year(and many near as I can tell) would come up with a way to do the same via WEB voting.

Botnst 11-27-2011 08:14 PM

God knows it couldn't hurt, given the current crap.

compress ignite 11-27-2011 08:22 PM

Nah !

Even if the Security concerns could be worked out,and every eligible American
could vote online...
Next, some genius would suggest we vote online for EVERYTHING.
(As in get rid of representative government)
Just think how many Lobbyists and Elected Whores that would put on the Bread lines.

THAT would be 'Orrible!
We'd have to devote and hour a week to Interactive Citizenship online.

MS Fowler 11-28-2011 07:46 AM

My initial reaction is to oppose it, but I am open to the argument.

On a more basic level, I wonder if making voting "easier" is a good thing. Shouldn't people have to expend so energy to be able to exercise the franchise? I can envision an app where you go from playing World of War to voting in one keystroke.

Well anything would be an improvement. It would probably net a Prez that beats what we've got.

I think a simple thumb scan set up would work.

I don't really see how making it hard to do helps democracy, voting should be as easy as possible.

The will of the people is usually the right course. In the 2000 election, Al Gore actually won by 500,000 votes. One must contemplate how much better off we the people would be if the people had prevailed over the Electoral College.

elchivito 11-28-2011 05:27 PM

In a perfect world, I'd love to see the electoral college put in the dumpster and direct, electronic election of ALL officials including the president. Polling places could be set up for those who don't have or don't trust their service providers. In reality, there are lots of problems that could arise, but none any worse than hanging chads I don't imagine.

Messing with how people vote is unlikely to change the outcome in a positive manner. Down here voting is compulsory ~ dont vote & you get fined. Informal votes are about 1%.
We dont get any better representation.
Having online voting will increase the DB vote.
Most DB's down here have a cheap old PC & a basic internet connection so they can use yahoo chat rooms, view porn & play games. With the appropriate sort of advertising I am sure they will open another window & vote for some DB sympathizer.
In the interests of public health they need to go out & get some fresh air & sun light on their way to the polling booth.

elchivito 11-28-2011 05:55 PM

Yeah, everybody knows only DBs have old computers and dialup. They're also the only ones who play games and surf for porn. Screw them.

The sallies down here had a program of getting old PC's & handing them out to such. The explanation was it would help them find a job.

They dont use dial up ~ way too slow !!
