Feral Chickens on Kauai
Will be going there soon. On the WEB I see there's quite a problem with feral chickens on Kauai. They're eveywhere - parking lots - shopping centers - etc. Their natural enemy - the mongoose - is not on Kauai as it supposedly is on other Hawaiin Islands. Just going by what I come up with online.
Are they also a nuisance on rural roadways - car travel once outside of a populated area? Thanks for your time. |
Do the chickens have large talons?

I was there for a week last december, the chickens are amusing and everywhere but not much of a road hazard. They tend to stay off the road and/or get off the asphalt when cars come.
Beautiful island, probably my favorite of them all. |
Yes, lots of feral chickens, roosters and chicks all over town. It's a lot better than the eerie sound of coqui frogs in Hilo all night long. The chickens aren't much of a nuisance, except if there's a rooster nearby in the morning.

Yeah, I've been there
My wife and I spent 6 weeks on Kauai while I was working on a project.
I was told that what they call "free chickens" are a result of hurricanes blowing down the chicken coops over the years. The funny looking palm trees are also hurricane survivors. Apparently feral chickens show up in almost all hurricane-prone areas. I've seen them on British West Indian islands and Virgin Islands. They are no problem, in fact some of the population live on them. There are only two kinds of chicken, wise or eaten. |

I can't imagine it would be any better/worse than the feral chickens in Key West. That's akin to me seeing squirrels all over the place in the northeast.
