Name some things.........

That your children have done that you have never done.

My War Hero Son has.

1. Been to several foreign countries
2. Has parachuted out of an airplane
3. Driven a military tank
4. Saved someone's life

What have your children done that you haven't done?

I'm afraid I would have to turn that one around. I've done some of those things and my children haven't.

Thanks to your son for his service!

Fun thread...

Thing One:
  • Get chased by brown bear at Cold Bay, Alsaka (thanks, I'll pass on that one).
  • Live one summer in a tent on an island in the Skagway river.
  • Drive tugboats for fun and profit

Thing Two:
  • Play twice in the NCAA DivIII final four women's volleyball.
  • Perform spinal surgery training procedures on cadavers.
  • Run a marathon

Stuff I've done that Dad didn't ever get to do:
  • Spend a watch at the wheel of USCGC Tackle, breaking ice in the Penobscot river.
  • Visit Paris, Carcassone, Amsterdam, Cape Town, Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney, Melbourne, Christchurch, Auckland and Karnack, TX.
  • Pull calves.

Stuff my Dad did that his Dad never did:
  • Boatswain on a square-rigged sailing vessel.
  • Helmsman on a square-rigged sailing vessel.
  • Talk a man out of committing suicide.
  • Be a good father.

Things the previous generation did that I never did:

- Put down a Japanese POW uprising at a US prison camp in Alaska
- Guard the Manhattan Project during a portion of WW II
- Capture escaped German POWs in Chicago
- Improve the process for controlling temperature in development of still color photography ( 1947)
- Teach famous 1950s series Detroit Tigers (Al Kaline and Chrlie Maxwell) to use woodworking tools

Since my kids are only 5-14, they haven't had much of a chance yet. But my oldest son (then 13) got to take the SATS last year and my daughter is taking them this year at 12.

I took them my junior year of HS and got a 1200, which was good enough for UConn at the time so I didn't bother taking them again my senior year. My son beat me (even if you only count the math and verbal) and I'm sure my daughter will, too.

They've gotten to root for the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots, NCAA Basketball Champion UConn Huskies (Men's and Women's) and NHL Champion Boston Bruins as a kid. They either sucked or were so-so when I rooted for them when I was their age. The Celtics were better back then, though.

One thing that we both got to do was learn how to drive a car and operate a backhoe at 13yo at our place in Maine with my father as instructor.

That kind of subsumes the rest.
