Old US cars don't all die, they go to Peru to work.

A "Collectivo" is usually a midsize or big American sedan, often as not shipped in from Miami, now forgotten by most of us, the Chevy Caprices and Malibu, Olds Cutlasses, Dodge Aspens and Coronets, and Plymouth Volares, with 6 cylinder and nissan Diesel engines and the odd Ford Fairmont,.

Seen here plying the streets of Lima Peru near the Presidential Palace downtown.

I was fascinated by this.

Smog tests, body shops and Insurance are pretty unknown.

The collectivos get jammed with 6-7 people, and all their luggage and offer another reasonable alternative than a bus to get to or from the really remote mountain, desert and coastal areas starting from Lima..

What a riot. I'm surprised to not see any Ford Granadas or Dodge Dart/Plymouth Valiants.

Amazing how durable some North American cars were, if not exposed to road salt and a throwaway mentality....

Plenty of those in Mexico being used as cabs too. Last time we were in Mexico city a couple of years ago, we hired a cab for the day each day we were there. Guy had some kind of early 80's vintage Oldsmobuick. Nice comfy back seat for getting around. I sold a 70's Mercury to a pal in Sonora. Just drove it across the line and handed it over to him for cash in Nogales. I don't know how or if he handled the title transfer, plates etc. and don't care. In AZ you can post a sold notice with the DMV online and don't have to specify who you sold the vehicle to. It's legally no longer your problem.

We're doomed, it's official.

I spent many an hour behind the wheel of such cars in the cab biz. Big Chevs usually, 70s and 80s vintage. Strong cars if not especially intelligently designed.

Some US cars continued to be built in South America after production ceased in North America. I can remember seeing new 60's style Ford Falcons in Argentina in the mid-70's.

Not well known is that the Chrysler Corporation used to maintain an assembly plant in Lima that built CKD "Completely Knocked Down") versions of the Dodge Coronets (called the Monanco in their last years of production) from the 1965-1978 model years, in Peru, but as CKD vehicles they were required to have as much Peruvian content as possible, viz, tires batteries, glass and so on,
so that is why so many still ply the roads of Peru today.

They made ideal collectivos, and indeed were very common as police and taxi vehicles in the USA in their time.

Many finally got the Peruvian paint job treatment along the way when the factory paint wore out.

This consists of dipping a house paint brush in a can of paint and attacking the car with it, the paint brush in hand, broadside on.

As far as Argentina, they obtained the body dies, after Fo Mo Co was done with them, from the first iteration of the Falcon 4 door sedan, the first ones that came out in 1960, and tweaked body style a couple of times, slightly, and continued them in production until about 1980-1981.

Here is the Argentine 1973 Ford Falcon Futura as seen on the brochure cover "Ford always offers you something better" hahaha

1973 Ford Falcon

Less known is that this also happened on a much smaller scale with the body dies of the 1968-1969 Ford Torino 4 door sedans

and called them the "Fairlane" Auto Brochures

(here are some pic's of some for sale right now)

Autos Nuevos y Usados en MercadoLibre Argentina

Used Ford Ltd , Paraná, Argentina, -1.0, , , Diesel, Manual - cars for sale OOYYO

and the 1966-1969 Ford Galaxie 500/LTD 4 door sedan bodies and Argentina also produced these latter models for sale with an Argentine accent in their slight restyle for home consumption. (as in Peru).

In 1977 my wife and I hitch hiked from Chile to near the bottom of South America, all over SA and up to Columbia. Most of it on old American school busses. Ridding an old school bus down the back of the Andes with the ass end overhanging as you go around a corner and staring down 2k feet into a valley littered with carcasses of those that didn't make it is just a bit unnerving.
