Fighting over sneakers

New Air Jordans still incite shopper violence 9 years after player's retirement - CNN.com

They are showing a lot of enthusiasm in trying to get these sneakers. You would think they were fighting over job applications at the opening of he new Walmart.

Drove by a store in Queens, NY on my way to work and saw 350 to 400 people lined up in the rain. At the head of the line there was a melee of A*$HOLES duking it out and NYPD just arriving on scene.

Over a frikkin pair of SNEAKERS?

What a crock!

These are the same crop of MORONS that come to my jobsites and DEMAND work or they will cause trouble. Show up to claim jobs wearing velour track suits and Air Jordans and Gold Jewelry and have no clue what work is about!

But they all seem to have $300 for a pair of Chinese made sneakers!

I remember back in my police career investigating at least three shootings involving the theft of sneakers and several armed robberies involving same.

This does not include the shootings and robberies over things like leather jackets, video game consoles and iPods which were numerous.

I don't think they would fight that hard for a job application.

What a bunch of dumbarses. Seems that it played out all over the country too.

Isn't Air Jordan some old dude that played like 40 years ago?

I'm amazed that he's still relevant enough for people to fight over his shoes. The stupidity of others never comes as a surprise.

I read about cops having to "pepper-spray" folks waiting outside a Seattle store as scuffles broke out!

And yeah, amazing how the idiots come out in droves and get violent in the act of waiting to purchase an overpriced pair of sneakers endorsed by a long-retired basketball star!

Stay tuned though...the Michael Jordan "Fruit of the Loom" signature line of underwear goes on sale today in limited quantities! (jk)....

Just as you think our world is about as crazy as it can get, you see adults acting like third graders on the playground. Scratch that.... I guess that's insulting third graders everywhere.

How absolutely silly can adults get?

It's the beginning of the end of the U.S. that I knew while still a young man.

Very sad indeed.

Pretty sure you can get knockoffs from China and resell them on ebay for cheap.

You folks missed the point, the buyers weren't in it for a retail purchase, it was an investment opportunity. Those shoes got flipped onto eBay within minutes, so it was capitalism at its finest.

What's the difference between the knockoffs made in China and the real ones made in China? Maybe it's the age of the orphans who make them.

MTI is right about this. There are thousands of these on Ebay right now and that is what people were lining up for. Not to get shoes to wear but to sell.

If you could buy something for $300 and sell it for $1,000 you might be motivated to stand in the rain, too. Clearing $700 for several hours of work sure beats working for minimum wage.

I know a guy that deals in used appliances. He gets most of his stuff for free since he will come out and haul it away for you for free and many retailers charge a 'disposal' fee. Most of the stuff he gets works with just a bit of repair, so he has some guys clean them up and sells them for about 25% of their new price. His mark up on them is somewhere in the 600% to 800% range which is about what these folks are hoping to make on the shoes.

And while he will pick up for free he charges for delivery and installation. Ebay shoe sellers also charge for shipping, so the business model is much the same.

Bring your own truck!

Back in those days, they were super popular in the ghetto areas of San Jose, San Francisco, Richmond and East Oakland, etc.

They were prestige because the drug dillers loved them, liked to wear them and could afford to buy them. A practical benefit for them was that they could run away from the po-po's quicker too.

And back then, some people really admired the drug dillers' financial "Success" based on EZ Money and wanted to dress like them.

Whenever there was a street demo that got ugly on Market Street, in SF, it was almost inevitable that some opportunistic people would crash the storefront window of Zales jewelry store and the Footlocker and do some fast "shopping".

The veneer of "civilization" is pretty thin sometimes.
