saw my first 5.7 GM diesel today

always heard how ****ty these engines are, and heard all the horror stories, and then yesterday this pops up on local craigslist-

1982 Olds 98 Regency Brougham parts

I figured I might give it a look, for 500 bucks

the car is built on a scale that I was pretty amazed to see in person, absolutely enormous, with that V8 looking like a little plant inside a mile of hood.

I don't know about that diesel, but those Olds 98s were sweet luxury cars. The company I worked for back then had a small fleet of cars that we would use on business trips. Everybody always tried to get first in line for the 98. It was a beauty.

For $500 I'd take the whole thing!

Yup, lots of room under that hood. The 82 has the roller cam, that was a big improvement. Then if they did an upgrade on the head gaskets and head bolts, it could be a fun car. I did very well with my 82 Olds Cutlass, but not as well with the bigger bodied 84 Cadillac. The Olds required only a minor repair on the injection pump in the 140,000 miles we owned it. The Cadillac was giving me a regular headache beginning at about 70,000 and at about 90,000 I pulled the engine and installed a 455 Olds engine and sold the car. I'd say buy the car and enjoy it. Keep it off the interstate and those long runs in hot weather with the AC on. Around town on short runs it could last a long, long time.

I would buy it and drive the snot out of it. I've heard the 5.7 gets a bad rap. I'd prefer a Cadillac tho.

ended up passing on it actually.

It has very little rust, just some surface rust underneath, and the engine looks totally complete, but the interior needs to be completely replaced. Just smells of rot, and damage to most of the seats, all need to be pulled and replaced/repaired.

Also, secondly, it is more than huge, don't have the space for the car at this time or the ability to move it with my van. Would be a major project getting it out of the field. Something worth looking at though for anyone interested in a project and a bigger truck. body seems straight and pretty decent

My main curiosity was to check out the 5.7, which looks exactly like the 6.2 from the outside. Actually, I was unable to see any external physical differences from the two 6.2s ive seen in person.

They're pretty similar. The 5.7 is based more on the 350 olds engine, in fact you can swap the heads and install a distributor and an intake with a carb and transform it into a nice hot rod gasser motor.

The 6.2 is heavier and more closely related to the Rat motor my favorite machinist says. He likes the 5.7's and says built using all the best upgrade parts they make a pretty decent and economical motor.

He has a diesel olds v-6 that he threatens to put into something every few months. I always try to talk him into using a 617 turbo instead and he always ends up buying another jeep or such.
