Craiglist Computer Purchase

Thinking about purchasing a computor from Craigslist. Guy seems ok but had a moment of paranioa and thought I should check the serial number against a stolen computor registry. Started to do that but it's a little intimidated in wanting to leave my info there. Anybody ever go through that process?

Thanks in advance.

I just bought a used Dell Latitude D630 from Craigslist. To be honest, I didn't even consider the risk of it being hot. I'm replying to give you a link to a good article on what to look for when buying a used laptop.

Best option is just to call the local police and see if they have the serial. Or call Apple, they are pretty good about helping. Also, you can run the serial online at Apple and see exactly when the warranty expires. If its still under a one year, you can add two more years! Even if you are not the original owner.

I would only buy electronics from craigslist if it comes with all the original disks, manuals, boxes etc.

Why? I seldom keep all of the packaging for electronics that I buy. If it's stolen, that's a risk you have to take, but if the seller seems legit it's unlikely.

Ask the seller to log in to AppleCare online. Verify that the comp. is in his/her name. 5 minutes, tops. If he won't do it, skate.

I've only had one Mac registered to me. Since Applecare is tied to the serial, it does not matter. One has to go a couple extra steps to tie it to an Apple ID. If they even have one. Its smart to do if stolen, but most people dont setup Apple IDs and thus there is not direct link made.

Hadn't thought of that, although if the seller is the original owner and bought the machine directly from Apple either from the Apple online store or from a brick/mortar Apple store and purchased AppleCare at the same time, it will be automatically registered. If he bought AC within the first year of ownership, it might not be registered. If it's not under AC but is under the original 1 year warranty, it should also be registered to him.

Never register any of my MAC's over the last 5 years, get a receipt for the sale from the seller including name, address, phone number etc and you are good. Even IF anyone at any time come to ask for this MAC you have a proof that you bought it. No one can go after you.
Enjoy your MAC

Are you sure? On TV crime shows you don't get to keep stolen merchandise even if obtained legally.

What are the chances that someone will walk into your house, looking for MAC computer because one like this was stolen 3,4,5 months ago in...Atlanta and you are in California for example??
What I have written is that if he gets receipt he will be OFF the hook if something goes wrong. That's all.
We are all making our own decisions in life, the OP just asked for opinion not for legal advice.
