Cruise Captain Says He 'Tripped' Into Lifeboat, Couldn't Get Out - Yahoo! News

Quote:
"I was helping some passengers put the life boat to sea. At a certain point the mechanism for lowering it, blocked. We had to force it. Suddenly the system unblocked itself and I tripped and I found myself inside the life boat with a number of passengers."

Once in the lifeboat that was lowered into the sea, Schettino insisted to the court that it was "impossible to go back onboard."
Umm... yeah!

That's probably how they hit the rock, too, just stumbled into it...sure.

At the very least, his career should be over. I'm not sure about Italian maritime or tort law, but his conduct arguably falls under criminal negligence.

Apparently he still is playing the victim; I've yet to see anything that even begins to suggest his own culpability in all of this.

Have you read the transcript where their coast guard told him to get back on the ship and help with the evacuation?

What a putz.

I read thru the transcript, published in the local paper.

Gawdalmighty, talk about a public a$$-chewing, replete with a few four letter words even! While the language might seem tame when you read thru it, you have to realize something - you just don't publicly chastise the captain of a ship or other officers at that level - it's usually done behind closed doors - so for this exchange to even happen in the first place means that guy REALLY screwed up!

Word in the same article says he deliberately deviated from the planned course to come in close to shore and "show off" his ship to tourists on shore. Well, they DID get one heckuva show.

Also said he had been released from jail on bond, but was being kept under house arrest at his residence pending charges being filed - which are supposedly going to include manslaughter.

I thought the Coast Guard officer was going to have a coronary when one of the excuses he threw back, for not going back onboard, was that "it's dark and I can't see anything". That was apparently the last straw for the Coast Guard captain - he chewed him out like a redheaded stepchild and ORDERED him to get back onboard NOW.

Well at least he wasnt talking with his hands like most of them do!!
Maybe he was checking the life boat & to his surprise they lowered it into the water, then it was way too hard to get back to the boat.
Hope he likes his holiday for the next 10 years !!

Another I-ti Captain did it differently but still got the blame... in '56

A good documentary of the Andrea Doria. Long, but interesting.

I heard today that the captain did not ask the passengers to take to the lifeboats until an hour after they hit the rocks, then the ship had listed so much as to hamper the launching of the boats.

He must have been impaired.
