Question Hyundai DIYers?

Hi -

My wife and I recently bought Hyundai Elantra Touring and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good DIY forum for those cars.

I also want to know how to document DIY oil changes etc. for the warranty...

I never have had to deal with this new-vehicle thing And I have to chant 'gasoline, gasoline' every time I fill it up (all we have had are diesel MBs).

Thanks,
dd

I don't think the diesel nozzle will fit----by design.

You can "yahoo" for Hyundai forum. Seem to be a lot of people who want to trick them out, or complain, or brag, but not as much "hands on" stuff from what I've seen. Some newer Hyundai use an oil filter mounted up high on the top of the engine----( like a Mercedes diesel) --but the wailing about it was impressive.

One nice thing is that Hyundai publishes all the tech manuals free on the web. I like that. So far we have resisted the urge to buy a new car, but if/when we do, this may well be the one.

My 1986 Hyundai was a DIYer, it dismantled the CV joint all by itself at 58,000 miles.

The good thing is that Hyundai recognized that ey were making crap, and decided to improve. Their decision to off the most comprehensive warranty in the early 2000's would prove to be their death, or their salvation. Warranty costs on poor products would have bankrupted them. Instead, the warranty attracted a lot of buyers who would never have looked twice.

Thanks guys - I'll check out their tech manuals. I don't want to modify anything, just change the oil and the air filter :-)

I did not want to buy a new car at all. But, if you have to, the Hyundai warranty and build quality are very good. Several of the components are placed with an obvious eye towards service. Overall Im happy with the purchase and the fact that I can concentrate wrenching hours on the MB's.

And, the insurance with equal covereage is LESS on the 2012 car than it is on my 1985 300D. Did not expect that...

I went to a Harley Owners Group (HOG) Primarry Officer Training session back around 2001. Jim McCaslin, the President of the Motor Company at the time was asked a question by a guy from Minnesota about Harley extending their warranty life because some owners have short riding seasons and can't get close to 12,000 in 12 months. The guy mentioned Hyundai's lifetime warranty as an example. McCaslin, without batting an eyelash responded: "Hyundai has to do that to sell cars".
He then went on to explain Harley's warranty policy to the audience.

On the self oil changes the dealerhip should know the makers policy. I own a few of their vehicles and checking on rust proofing options is not a bad ideal if you live in rust prone areas that is.

I go to this site for my Kia Minivan -
Kia Carnival & Sedona 2006+ - Kia Forum

I'd expect they have an Elantra forum - not sure how good. THe minivan is kinda sparse but thats what I expected

Kia also has a web service - KGIS - LOTS of technical info, drawings, DIY stuff that is factory endorsed...It'd be worth looking that up to see if Hyundai does the same thing (IIRC Hyundai owns Kia...)

Exactly what I was saying. Back in 2001 they HAD to do that or die. But 11 years later------their products have improved, and they STILL offer that warranty.
