Tax appraisal value ripp off - rant

Sorry, this is just a rant.

I just got back from Denton county tax assessor so that I can register my 89 560SEC. The bill came up to 1/3 of what I paid for the car. When I saw the assessed value, they listed it for 3 times what I paid for the car, and more inline with what I would expect to pay for a 2002 Mercedes and not a 23 year old project car with a 150,000 miles.

When I questioned it, they said that I can take it to their appraiser and pay $100 for them to re-appraise it.

This seems to be a common trend with Denton Co. Instead of raising taxes, they ding you by over valuing your property so that they can tax you more.

They've attempted to increase the value of my house by more then 40% since the housing crises began.

What a racket.

They do the same thing in NYC, but if you get the seller to sign a form affirming that the sale price was whatever it was, you can get the extra tax back.

Yep, nothing like that here. They force you to fill in a form, but rape you anyway.

Well, you have lower income tax, so they have to make the money back somehow

Is this a one shot sales tax, or an annual personal property tax?

New Jersey will send a letter to the buyer suggesting additional tax due if the recorded purchase price look screwy. That, or else get the seller to sign an affadavit verifying the sale price. Good luck with that!

It's a sales tax. I don't have an issue with the tax as I do with the appraisal value. It's fair to pay tax on what you buy. It's unfair for them to decide what they think it's worth and tax you on that. This amounted to a 30% tax which is considerably more then what I would pay in taxes when I lived in Europe.

That's a red state for you.

Next door to you (Utah) they tax your car purchase every time. This is one thing I don't understand here in the states. How it is "legal" for the state to tax you on a second hand goods? Back in the UK, you pay VAT on new car purchase, but after that, neve ever again. If you buy a old car you never pay tax on it ever again.

It's a sales tax rather then a value added tax. Sales taxes are applied for each transaction.

Must be a Denton county thing...

...didn't pay a dime more for a used vehicle I purchased through a broker in Dallas county...TTL matched the % cost of the vehicle levied by Dallas county.

Not sure why Denton works that way?

In NJ, the '83 has historic plates, so no registration fee, no state inspection and the only tax I paid on it was 7% of the value of the purchase price, one time.
No limitation on mileage with the historic plates, either. It just can't be a daily driver.

The price I pay for that is living in NJ

Cars are a special case because there's a mechanism through the registration process to collect taxes on subsequent transfers. If you sold a Rolex for $20K in a private transaction such as on eBay, there wouldn't be a mechanism to collect sales tax. Besides, the premium you pay for fuel makes me happy to pay sales tax on a used car

My town has my TD appraised value, and thus taxed, at $6000! It's realistically a sub-$1000 car, maybe $1500 if pumped up to the million-mile/greaser crowd. I can bring the car to one of three hearings, all in September, to show the committee that it's not worth anywhere near $6K. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make it to one of those hearings yet.

We have 10% sales tax where I live, and we get murdered even worse. They nailed me with an "appraised value" of $14k on my '85 SD with 214k miles (in need of serious resto). I paid $500 for the car...

That's a blue state for you.
