The answer you may be looking for: if you're working on a 1099, you may try Freelancer Union and/or AvantGuild, if they're available in Kansas.

No, 100% on me I'm self employed.
$5k deductible per year, co pay's are pretty low. Unlimited lifetime benefits if I get really hurt.

Covers drugs and dental to a point. Although on my most recent cleaning they only coughed up $15 on a $114 dollar bill.

As you age some like ourselves take quite a few drugs. The wife far more than I do as a result of her past serious heart attack.

If a retired couple had to pay all this at american drug costs it would put a serious dent into any pensions. It could ruin retirement unless there are a lot of additional accumulated reserves or other income. Or can an american afford and buy a comprehensive drug plan at advanced ages?

The copays in the states can be as high as our overall cost for the same medacines up here in Canada. This does not make Canada a better place. It is just what it is and from time to time I wonder how some americans manage as these can be serious issues.

There must be some system to get them if there are not enough funds? Here you are asked in the hospitals if you have the means or insurance for them if you are below 65. If really not they will be provided free. It is just to avoid the high cost of perhaps landing back to the hospital for the taxpayers if you did not take them.

After a heart attack an american told me his copay was nine hundred a month with a decent plan. Basically he took the same medications as my wife. On her blue cross plan her costs where five dollars per prescription filling. Her drug plan costs about 88 dollars a month I believe since she retired.

The big answer is where your "home base" will be. Are the options listed above what you can get in Kansas? What does TylerH860 have since you will be in his area?

I am self employed, and had self employed insurance in MO, NY, and RI. NY had by far the least coverage, options, (one of two) and was nearly 3 times more expensive.

I paid 140 a month in MO, with basic health insurance and maybe a 2500 dollar deductable, 450 a month in NY with less coverage and a higher deductable, and now I pay about 200 a month in RI with about the same coverage with additional dental (I didnt have that in either NY or MO)

My experience has been that the midwest is pretty reasonable. Blue cross Blue shield seems to be everywhere, im using that in RI.

Arent you planning to go to south America though? I think any insurance card will get you medical treatment in the US in an emergency, how does it work in south America?

I have a relative using "Kaiser" heath insurance or services in CA, which I believe is a non profit, or something like that. organized like a credit union, with a money pool, and way lower rates she said. She swears by it, nothing similar where I am though

Those buying drugs in the US are subsidizing the cost of drugs for the rest of the world. Thanks to the Supremes, drug companies can spend as much money as they please to keep their whores in congress.

That sounds more like a group policy. I had such a policy when I was in business and a member of the C of C.

I had BC/BS last year. I liked it. $1000 deductible, but most everything was covered including CAT/CT, MRI, X-Rays etc. I have Geisinger now and I hate it. They don't cover crap, $1500 deductible, costs 2x as much for single and 4x as much for 1+spouse... I would leave and go back to BC/BS if I had to pay 2x what I pay for Geisinger now.

Yes, I did my research and those companies in the first post were the ones that I found more convincing in terms of travelling everywhere in the US with my headquarters in Kansas. I am aware that if I go past the US border heading south I will have to buy additional travel insurance, but there will be time for that.
