Our Newspaper Keeps Getting Sprayed!

For a few years now we have had this phenomenon where our morning paper gets sprayed about once a month by some kind of critter out at the end of our driveway. If you happen to grab the paper without looking and the dark yellow liquid gets on your hands, it is the most horrific smell imaginable and it usually takes all day of scrubbing to get it off. It's like skunk times 10, only we don't have skunks. We have raccoons, foxes, squirrels, and a few things I never identified.

What kind of critter would repeatedly be doing this to a newspaper in a plastic bag and more importantly, why??

I've been in the printing business for 30 years and have seen my share of sour smelling paper. The paper making process has a lot of water used in it. And if a paper mill isn't careful the paper can sour.

How would that work? Motion detection? It happens in the wee hours of the morning and the paper always lands somewhere slightly different.

A Little wire nicely placed with some HOUSE current running to it should put an end to the problem.

You can get a game camera for about 50 bucks. Hang it on a fence post or tree facing the area where the paper gets delivered. You'll catch your beasty in action. BTW, "We don't have skunks" sounds like famous last words to me. Do those NO SKUNKS ALLOWED signs really work?
