Yet another Water Heater Question.
For the last two days, my water heater has been acting up. When I turn the HW on in the tub, warm water comes out and quickly turns cold. I waited 30 minutes and the water get hot. Any thought why it would do this?

Gas-electric?
Sounds like something not sensing water temp. |

Sorry. It's electric and it's about 7 years old.

Sounds like the water heater had expelled all it's hot water and needed to heat up the fresh cold water

Since water is drawn out from the top, and filled from the bottom, either the top thermostat or element may be going out. I'd lay money on the element being corroded with minerals and shorting out at times

I agree with the others saying a bad thermostat. As I remember, one controls power to the other so it's probably the master.
Oh, and I applaud you for not calling it a "hot water heater"...

The kitchen sinks taps or vanity taps are acting exactly the same? I am not a plumber but some bathtub taps have some form of shuttle valve in them that may be sticking.
Or if there is no water pressure on the hot side the cold will not flow either. I am not too sure I want to learn a lot more about these. Other posters will be more familiar. |

It's probably your dip tube. There is a tube in the cold water inlet that pushes the cold water to the bottom of the tank. Hot water is drawn off the top. The tube snaps off. Temperature going all over the place is a good sign it's broken.
