Why do folks post indiscreet crap on social networks?!!!

What is it about the internet and social networks that compel people to post compromising pictures online, or make disparaging statements that in both cases at minimum result in widespread embarrassment, or worse, career-ending backlash or criminal charges!???

I get a lot of flak from associates and friends alike about not having a Facebook page. Sorry, but there isn't anything that I wish to share about my life that prompts people I don't care for to respond (except this forum, of course).

Given that statement, if I DID have a page, I think I would apply the "Grandma Rule" when posting...i.e., would I be okay if Grandma happened upon my page, both public AND private?

Someone I know posted a video of himself, bragging about a recent sexual conquest to a close relative...he didn't think ahead, as his girlfriend had access to his private account and discovered said video. It didn't end well, and the relationship was immediately terminated.

Is there an allure somewhere that I'm missing that should have me seriously thinking about posting stuff that I wouldn't otherwise share?

Here's the link that prompted my rant:

Something doesn't make sense in that story. If he intended to only send the photo to a friend but mistakenly set the privacy setting of the photo wider, it's a minor mistake. If it was only set for his friends or the public for 10 minutes, how did anyone find out about it to cause problems at his job? How different is it from picking up a set of Kodak prints at the drug store and dropping the print with a nude picture on the floor of the drugstore and coming back to pick it up later?

Attention seeking behaviours. Really I have never thought of even having a nude picture of myself. Mind circulating it in any way.

Do you have a picture of your wife in the nude? If not I can spare one. Just pm me.

Just nude?

(a) Americans should stop being such babies about the human body. Yeah, even the so-called "Christians" -- last I checked, the human body is a beautiful thing that G-d created.
(b) He should have said "so what" and refused to resign. Nude photos aren't illegal, and he probably could have dragged the case out in the courts for years or won outright if the school fired him.

This only proves that some Americans are a bunch of oversensitive, humorless idiots whose attitudes may have cost a fine man his job.

the speed of it is what amazes me. Im not surprised that 10 minutes of exposure someone saw it who shouldn't have.

Couple weeks ago, a friend and I baked a cake for another friend of mine's birthday. (not something we ever do, I assure you, so it was 2nd grade quality at most), and when it was presented, someone instantly took a cell pic and posted it on her page in about .5 seconds, I didn't even notice that it had happened.

Within 5 minutes, people who were on the way to the birthday party had already seen the cake on facebook on their phones, and said so walking in. I was astonished,
"heres the cake we made"
"Oh, ive already seen it, turned out great"
"How the F did you already see this, we just made this about 10 minutes ago and presented it 5 minutes ago?!"
"Facebook"
"How the F did it get on facebook?" ect

It was incredible, id say within 20 minutes, everyone of her friends and family had seen it.
God forbid you do something stupid like this guy, bet you a thousand people saw his nude picture.

Most of the people that post pictures of themselves nude . . .shouldn't. Do they have those carnival mirrors in their houses?

because the drug store doesn't automatically notify everyone in your friend network that you dropped the nude picture, as well as post it on their pages if its public. To compare, the drug store in a matter of seconds would have to grab the picture, and deliver copies to everyone you know.

Ok, so the consequences are different but the moral culpability seems comparable and really only warrants a 'oops', or perhaps a 'yuck' if you're on the receiving end.

Don't have an account, so im not sure, blessedly. Recipient liked it, it was tasty, what some bonehead 3200 miles away who went to high school with me for 20 minutes thinks is the least of my concerns.

maybe so, but if I were a parent and got a nude pic of Mr. so and so as an update, my kids teacher, id start to question his judgement. Basically, id ask-
1. You are digitizing nude pics,
2. you are posting them on the internet,
3. you made the ridiculous blunder of making it public,
4. you teach my kid what? The judgment that created the previous train of actions seems flawed.

From the guys perspective, it would be an disgrace that he would probably never outlive.

Girl couple grades older than me in HS brought in a bunch of nude polaroids for her boyfriend. Some other kid saw them, stole them, made copies, and posted them on every bulletin board in the school.

She was 3 years ahead, kids were talking about it when I graduated, and kids were STILL talking about it when my youngest cousin graduated 4 years later. This girl was gone the year after her public humiliation, graduated. The teacher/coach would still be there, the disgrace would probably be perpetuated for 10 plus years as the kids gossiped about it.

This presumes you are Facebook friends with your kids teacher. That's different. How many are Facebook friends with their kids teachers? I'm not. Maybe I'm unusual in that regard.
