Scrap Car Legislation Alert!

There appears to be a bill in Congress to create local bureaucracies and fund with federal grants to get all cars over 15 years old off the road.

The article at the end of this link gives the details, as well as reasons why it ain't such a good idea.

You have been warned!

Just another way our government wasting our tax money!! This will never fly, but they have to dream up some legistlations to work on so they can keep themselves employed. Tell that to a guy who owns a '54 300 SL to scrap his car. How much Uncle Sam is going to pay for that? Or scrap a Ferrari Dino. Or how about a Ross Royce Silver Phantom? This is a joke!!! The problem is not the old cars on the road, its the way they manufacture the new ones. They all have the technologies and know how to make cars less dependent on the dino stuff, but they choose not to. They are making more new cars a month than all the oldies but goodies that are still on the road.

Don't the Japanese do that? Maybe there will be a special clause for Mercedes, like banks do for loans on used cars.

Nobel ideas - clean up the air, reduce dependency on foreign oil. However, will it really work that way? A lot of 'ifs' raised in the article, such as what if they sell their 28mpg 1986 'scrap' car and buy a new Expedition? If they really want a concrete step in reducing emissions and dependency on foreign oil, they could dump the daytime headlight program, according to this article at http://www.howstuffworks.com/question424.htm . This claims that if every car in the US had daytime lights, an extra 406 million gallons of gasoline would be consumed, and an extra 8 billion pounds of CO2 released! Even if this article is 10 times too pessimistic, it is still a lot of gasoline and pollution spent on good intentions. I worry every time a politician starts to talk about nobel ideas, which is sort of like a chicken urging people to be vegetarians!

When old Mercedes are outlawed, only old outlaws will have Mercedes.

Unocal, biggest polluter in Cali, tried this same ***** 20 odd years ago, crush old cars in return for "emissions credits",fortunately we in the car collector lobby got enough legislators with "juice"on our side and this crap was quashed.

Same *****,same reasons.
