Handguns are dangerous. Semi-automatic hand guns even more so. A policeman in INdianapolis some years back was sneaking up on a bad guy holding his gun pointing straight up and accidentally shot himself in the head....fatally.

It would be pretty easy to do, especially in the dark if you stepped into a hole or bumped something in the dark.

Being a cop is not like it is on cop shows on TV. They draw their gun multiple times each show. The reality is most cops seldom if ever draw theirs in anger so practice is the only time they really get a chance to get good with it.

Something as lethal as a big bore semi-automatic handgun is a dangerous thing to need to use once or twice in several decades but have to carry around all the time.

Cops don't train enough to shoot, so most departments give them Glock's which are hard to screw up under stress.

Downside is they have no external manual safety so if you accidentally pull the trigger, boom.

The 17 is ok, but the 21 and other large caliber ones are just massive chunks of plastic in my hand. I just can't get comfortable with them or shoot them well.
