Daytona 500

Not much of a Nascar guy but Juan Pablo Montoya just crashed into a jet dry truck and it completely exploded

My brother went down to the race but after it got postponed again (from yesterday to noon today to tonight), he said screw it and managed to get a flight back tonight. I'm guessing he's pretty happy with his decision.

I grew up in Daytona but , like everything else, got fed up with the excess money in the sport. I can't see it, especially the ordeal for that particular race yesterday (this morning, actually). My last 500 attended was around 1970, though I have been to more recent "24 Hours" races.

I can remember being a kid around 1967 and getting FREE passes to go into the pits during practice for the 500 to photograph the cars and drivers. These were available to anyone, you didn't have to be a VIP.

I haven't watched more than 5 minutes of a NASCAR race in the last 20 years. I got as much of it as I could when I was a teenager, which wasn't much in those days, at least from Texas. In 1965 or 66 Ned Jarrett won the Annual championship while racing out of a two car garage with a dirt floor. He did it in a REAL stock car, not a race car with skin to resemble a street car.

Anyway, for some reason when I saw it start last night I hit the record button. I woke up early and couldn't sleep so I started watching. Danica Patricks commercial painting up the girl was worth hitting the button. I fast forwarded through a bunch of it, and then saw Montoya hit the Drier Truck. It was amazing. It was even more amazing that they finished the race.

nascar often reminds me of big time wrestling but I have to respect that they went to so much effort to complete the race and give the racers the chance to race to the finish.

....course they had a lot more time to sell hot dogs, beer and such too!

I HAD to keep an eye on the race (work reasons) and saw every ever-lovin'-rain-soaked-Daytona-History-Going-Back-To-Before-Dinosaurs-Could-Squeeze-Out-A-Lump moments...and the 2+ hours of track-cleanup...and the upteen accidents before the predicted "Green-White-Checkered" finish...and THAT came at 0115 EST...

ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz........

You can quote me on that! ^^^^^^^

I'm surprised in this day and age of $4+/gallon fuel that they are still using the v8 engine. They did go to FI this yaer though which is a giant step forward for NASCAR. Personally, I would rather watch top fuel drag racing. It does not take as long.

Fact: 1 jumbo Jet carrying an NFL team from New York to Los Angeles, uses more fuel than all of the cars consume in an entire Indy 500.
( Did that make sense? sounded like it wasnt worded right).
