$2,995 to buy it. And I think over $8,000 into it already, everything sorted, Including repainting, AMG 17" monoblocks, new Continintal Extreme Contact DWS tires, a brand new spare tire, new brakes and Bilstein HDs all around, Lorinser spoiler, euro dark amber blinkers, 40% tint, 500E Remus exhaust, all fluids changed and current, a it's a Albuquerque NM rust free car from 1995 (last year of these) to 2001 when the second owner nabbed it at the selling dealer as a lease return, per the books and records, and kept it to last year, when he sold it to a MB mechanic that works in a w124 specialty MB repair shop in N Sacramento that kept it for a few months and sold it to me, where bondavi found it on Craigslist with 131k on it.. The owner that had it all those years has stayed in touch with me and told me the other day if he'd known how to get it into the shape I did he would probably never have sold it and got the new Audi Avant, and said this E 420 was the best car he ever had in his life. (he is 59). So I like it a lot, it is fast balanced and quiet. If I ever find some E500 sway bars I will put them on - but I like it enough now fr sure to keep it. It is a real fun driver though, already since July 27 of last year I ran up over 13,000 miles on it. It is no fuel miser though... Here are some recent pic's (cell phone at sundown) of the "Red Plum" [

I remember that red E420 on Craiglist. I love that color... but didn't pursue it, since it didn't have ASR & heated seats. I could retrofit heated seats, but not ASR, and I won't buy another 124 without ASR... it's just awesome in winter if you live anywhere that gets ice or snow.
The E420 is surprisingly good on fuel, should get 18-20 around town, and 23-25 on the freeway. The long-term average on both my E420's (over ~50kmi between the two) has been 20-21mpg, which ain't too shabby for 275-290hp on tap. If you need better economy, get a diesel. But anyway, yes, the E420 is ~75% of a 500E/E500. However, that last 25%... oh yes, that last twenty-five percent... |
