Thanks to all the men and women who served on CVN-65.

I tip my hat to the Big E and the 51 years of service!

The sad part is she is scheduled to be scrapped after decommissioning.

Scrapping is a better idea than turning it into an artificial reef. Imagine the present scrap value of all the ships and old RR cars that have been sunk instead of recycled. Fish have survived for millions of years without our help- they don't need it now.

Hopefully it will be recycled here, not sent to China or India to return as a trinket in Walmart or a cheap tool in Home Depot.

Its be great to see it as a museum, but once you put a nuclear reactor (or 8) in something, making it publicly accessible becomes a much bigger chore. Yeah, the Nautilus is a museum right now, but it requires a small crew of Active duty Navy guys to keep the NRC(?)/safety people happy.

Cincinnati couldn't even get the SSN693(?) USS Cincinnati to come here as a museum - too much security and radcon concerns - and its a smaller/much more manageable machine...

...I'd still love to walk a 688-class again someday.

It would be neat to see all of it recycled into another ship, bearing the name.

Obviously you do not fish offshore. Using these great machines as underwater structure and ultimately reefs generate many dollars from offshore fishing enthusiast. I think using for artificial reefs is a fitting end to the great service these vessels provided our country. I doubt the government will see a dime in scrape value someone will ultimately want to turn it into a floating museum. Which would be the second best end could be.

I wonder what type of vessel will be named "Enterprise" when it is again used.

Coincidentally, the Dad of a friend of mine died last week. He was on the Enterprise (CV-6) in WWII as a young marine manning AA. Quite a character. Louis J. Michot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I agree, America can afford to fund a floating museum. A private group, yeah they can fund a floating museum.

Interesting question Bot, I have four friends that served on her, I would have but I was in heat with a fine young girl at the time they enlisted so I passed. I sometime wish I would have enlisted with them, they saw the world from that vessel.

Despite being the most decorated ship in World War II, CV-6 was sadly scrapped instead of what should of been made into a museum.
CVN-65 looks to be following tradition.

My daughter was just married to a young sailor that left today on that very ship! He is proud to be part of her last deployment. She flew to Norfolk to see him off and to drive his car back to Florida. We salute the crew of the USS Enterprise CVN-65. We miss our son in law and look forward to his safe return and for all who serve on her!

They're already working on a new class of carrier to succeed the Nimitz class - of which every carrier built in the last 40 plus years has been.

Would be fitting if the first one of the new class were named Enterprise.

I'd like to see them go back to some of the traditional names they've used for carriers - Lexington, Saratoga, Constellation, Kitty Hawk, etc. The Navy used to have a standard naming system for different classes of ships - that pretty much went out the window in the late 70's/early 80's - at one time during that period, we had 4 recommissioned battleships, 6 nuke-powered guided missle crusiers, and 10 or more ballistic missile subs all named for states.

I don't like this BS of naming carriers these days for politicians that are barely out of office - smacks of a little too much hubris and political motivation.
