Second hand smoke

Second hand smoke is being used as the excuse to pass more and more legislation. Right now the MD legislature is preparing to pass a law to make it illegal to smoke in a car with an occupant under 8 years old. The sponsors wanted to prohibit allowing a achild in any car in which someone had ever smoked. The "dangers" of second smoke is cited as the reason we need to protect the children.

My question is simple. Are there studies that show causality? I know of anecdotal stories, but are there scientific studies? I also know that the UN spiked its own study about a decade ago because it did not find a solid link.

So, is second hand smoke as dangerous as they want us to believe, or is this more junk science passed off as real research?
Please notice that I am not advocating any position regarding legislation--I am only asking questions.

^^ as for pets, Another 5 seconds of searching and 4 keystrokes

http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=Secondhand+smoke+pets&btnG=Search&as_sdt=0%2C39&as_ylo=&as_vis=0

Interestingly the bottom result on the first page addresses exactly the effects of secondhand smoke in cars with children. Google is your friend.

Of course you are.

It's another law that needs to be put in place because the legislators are quite convinced that the general public is too stupid to do the right thing.

The right thing is to stop smoking. It doesn't take a genius to realize that the by-products of burning ANYTHING are toxic to the human body. Do we really need to discuss the level of toxicity that is necessary for the body to generate a negative response to the stimulus?

If the "right thing" was done by the population, you wouldn't need the law.

Look up Dr. Trichopoulos. He is a renowned Harvard epidemiologist who first established a causal link between second hand smoke and numerous diseases including lung cancer.

I'm cheap, so I smoke Black & Milds Vanilla. I started smoking cigars at the age of 43. I never smoked before then.

Well, no I am not. If 2nd hand smoke is indeed toxic and dangerous, then it should be limited.

I do have a problem with your idea of the population doing "the right thing". I would ask, "the right thing" as defined by whom? That argument could be broadened to force people to do all sorts of things that some desire them to do.

Prolly not as bad as those cheap old White Owls, "2 for 25", when I was a school kid.

Still I see the issue is cardiovascular; not lung cancer. I understand that is certainly is an irritant. Combine that with the C-V affects, and it probably warrants limitations.

My take on smoking is... You have the right to smoke in your own home, in the absence of underage children but if you live in a condo or apartment complex then smoking should be strictly prohibited because it WILL enter the other units. Smoking should also be prohibited in ANY public place because I don't feel like getting a headache smelling the smoke of another person walking past me on the sidewalk. I also don't feel that I must be obliged to hold my breath every time I enter or exit a building where there is a pathetic bunch of nicotine addicted fiends bundled around the entrance sucking on cigarettes.
