LOL My mom used to have the same car, just in beige. The thing was a decent to drive, if you didn't mind the top cap of the shifter falling off in your hand whenever you touched it. Dad glued it back at least one a month.

I had friends that bought one of those new. It almost immediately began to disintegrate. Wasn't that part of the AMC-Renault or was it Chrysler-Renault liason?

On the other hand, I had an R-5 that was bulletproof and kind of a hoot to drive.

Rented one years ago while on business in Palm Springs. Car was okay for my needs, but I felt like a clown in traffic amongst Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos...

It was Motor Trend's 1980 car of the year. IIRC, it was an AMC/Renault product. Lee Iacocca had his hands full back then, he wasn't involved with the French.

Le Car / Encore

I drove an '85 'til the CV Joint started "clicking" - the station didn't want to spend the money fixing it...so, it finally got towed off the property.

My mother, though, had '83(?) "hatchback" Buick...it was the predecessor of the Cadillac that same sloping rear-end...POS was lighter than a ballet dancer...tap the brakes and the whole car would 180° on you before you realized it. I bought her a '95 Camry and managed to get that POS Buick to the junk yard before the engine fell out...the motor mounts were non-existent...

Didn't the Alliance have some design quirk regarding the location of the thermostat or water pump impeller that caused an air bubble in the cooling system that impeded coolant flow if the coolant was just slightly low?

Yep, the 4-dr.. Only the wheels were plain steel with covers...pretty mundane. At the junk yard, the only thing worth taking from the vehicle was the battery...and they let us take it.

It was a pig.

Part of the problem though was my mother really didn't care to much about the car to begin with...it was a "trade-up" from a '74 Pinto. I guess, from her stand-point, the novelty wore off REAL FAST. (Gas prices and a fixed income...) Plus, the brothers left behind didn't really help her keep it in good shape. She'd still have this thing if I hadn't bought the Camry for her and that, in and of itself, is too scary to think about...

As you probably remember, it was not a hatchback, but had a conventional trunk. What compelled GM to adopt this styling is a mystery to me. I recall that these GM 4-door sedans had fixed glass in the rear doors, with only a little flip-out pane in the notchback sedans and that triangular C-pillar flip-out pane in the 4 door shown above. Other than cost savings, I think that this allowed the rear door interior panels to be a bit narrower, thereby improving hip room. Must have been a thrill-a-minute to be in the back seat of this car in Florida with a dead A/C unit...

Yep, you're right...that was a trap-door for the trunk...really, the whole rear/passenger area was like...a...an...afterthought. The windows didn't do anything...it was like they were for saving the kids from throwing their clothes out of...I don't remember too much about the rear seats as I would either drive the thing or I had my own vehicle...

As for any car being a thrill-a-second for being in the sun...the AMC Pacer won that award (Darwin, if you were stuck in traffic) hands down.

Start the flame-war on AMC....

They (speaking of the Alliance, but those awful GM things weren't much better) were complete crap, but very cheap crap after they depreciated to near zero in about four years, so lots were left on the roads up here for years after they left the showrooms, being driven by the chainsmoking-tshirt-wearing trailer park moms and odd looking old men with 1970s hair.

They had some sort of racer-GT version that went like scat, looked ok too, but probably fell apart even quicker.

The bright spot was the convertible, which was the cheapest way to drop a top... and still is, if you can find one that runs. I see one or two on the roads ever summer.

If one turned up for $400 with a current inspection I would buy it and plow through our winter with it.
