Sweet ride.

A 3.6 swap for my TE is in the works, but dont have any time or motivation to really work on it.

Plus CA laws suck ass regarding motor transplants. Something like this would get impounded and then crushed.

I doubt that. If it passed smog it could get re titled at the DMV section of the AAA (where things are more lax) and nobody would be the wiser.

The history of it says that it was first titled in Encino, California so almost certainly it was sold new out of Autosteigler (now called "Mercedes Benz of Encino" for the past few years) on Ventura Boulevard.

It is a sweet looking ride for sure in that color. Slickest looking stationwagon that's EVER been made, even though the body style is over 25 years old; another Bruno Sacco-styled masterpiece.

I prefer V8's though for the most part. Many 6 cylinder cars sound like a vacuum cleaner with a leaky cannister when you stomp on the gas pedal or floor it into passing gear.

A big drawback is the stock SLS rear suspension, though.

I just drive mine accordingly. It's not the sporty kind, I much prefer a stiffer spring type with Bilstein 'gas-shockers'.

Too bad it doesn't have a leather interior. I'd think it could breeze through an emissions check if all the control devices were moved over from the C class. The price seems not outlandish.

With motor transplants you are allowed to go forward time, not back... EG you can put a 2001 engine in a 1999 car, but can't put a 1999 engine in a 2001 car even if they are the same.

That is a correct reading of California emmisions regulations as they pertain to such a situation today.

Late last month I just smogged and titled this 1987 Mercury Colony Park wagon that I'd put in a 1991 Crown Victoria 302 into, and there were no problems legal or otherwise, with full disclosure provided.

This car should smog fairly easily, given it originally had an M104.

You need to swap all of the computers/smog equipment along with the motor... Car cannot have any active or pending codes, and must have all of the original smog equipment, in working order. Not a horrible swap, but alot more involved, especially on an 88 with CIS instead of the electronic fuel injection. Would love to do it, but with the way things are going with the CA smog control laws, EPA, and BAR, I just don't want to have the headache...

I prefer a nice Supercharged V8.

Most regular/naturally aspirated V8s (like the M117) seem tame - and they sound like little broken wind up cars....

A nice supercharged V8.... Well, all hell breaks loose when you just *look* at the pedal, and they make a fantastic sound.

They sound like a girl who is having an..... Never-mind.

Scream baby, scream.

BTW - Sorry Swede for threadjacking.... Lets get back on topic - this awesome 3.6 W124!

More thread jacking: BMW's new M3 will be a V6 with 3 turbos. Seems 8 and 12's are on the wane.

It's all good, better than endlessly beating down a topic in politix.

Hehehe, jacking your own thread - I like it.

Wish we had more car related threads on here.

I think V12s are going the way of the dinosaur. They are hugely impractical, and not efficient. Turbo/Supercharged V8s are giving the same performance with better efficiency numbers.

IMO the turbo M3 ends an era in motoring. To me - and many of my friends, BMWs has always been about a high revving, strung out motor derived from racing. The S50/S52/S54s were always high revving, fantastic naturally aspirated motor. They loved to be revv'd and could sit at redline all day long.

The S62 V8/S65 V8/S85 V10 was the same thing. Rev'd like a MoFo, loved to sit at high RPMs, and made glorious sounds. Also motors derived in one way or another from racing.

These new turbo - thingys... Well BMW, I am sorry, but you have lost my interest, as well as the interest of many of my friends...
