if memory serves. the VIN's from that time are shorter then the standard 14 character ones of Today. you'd need to speak to someone in the office of the place you are trying to get a quote/service from

Progressive can get you a live human to talk to 24/7. I suspect most of the other bigger insurance companies can too.

Quote:
That will give you a 17 digit code. See if that works. When they changed the codes over in the arly 1980s, the country origination code was one thing they added to stop gray market cars and distinguish them from grandfathered antiques and "oddball" cars. Hope that helps!

Both my MBs show the 14-digit code only on the insurance cards I have in the glove-box...also check the title and renewal slips you get from your state...sometimes, a file-clerk will "add" the numbers to "feel right" when they run across your record...so to keep everything straight...
DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR PAPERWORK WHEN YOU'RE AT THE DMV - OR - RENEWING YOUR RIDES... Nothing worse than spending a few extra hours trying to straighten out a VIN screw-up THAT IS NOT OF YOUR DOING... Don't ask...I had one in the past...and it was a royal PITA to straighten out. WOW (Word of warning: Don't even attempt to deal with this over any phone...it must be done in person at a DMV outlet...)
