While the fuel injected GM 3.8 liter V6 used in FWD vehicles beginning in the second half of the '80's was reasonably powerful and torquey, the carbed version in this Cutlass was a total dog. Our family had a late '70's Buick Regal (same generation as this Cutlass) with this engine, and I remember vividly driving up steep city hills with the gas pedal to the floor, and the speedo reading a dizzying 15 MPH.

I also recall one GM reaction to the early Seventie's gas crisis was to make the carbed 3.8 available in the 1976 Buick LeSabre, which was a whale of a car. I think Buick was trying to woo prospective 240D owners with that power to weight combination.

The 4.3L V6 wasn't too bad either. I had one transplanted into a '80-something Olds mid-sized wagon.

It originally had the 3.8 that burned up, so my mechanic xplanted a 4.3 from a Blazer for next to nothing. Decent power for a hi-mi motor, It was a great upgrade, but developed minor rod knock. Wasn't that an issue with the 4.3, don't recall for sure??

Don't know much about the 4.3...

There aren't enough puke icons to express my reaction to that car.

That car was junk when new. A monument to automotive failure.

Gotta agree with you on this one....

That is one ugly POS car. The reason it was always garaged is because the owners didn't want anyone to know they owned it

Most cars, (except our beloved Mercedes) from about 1973 to the mid to late '80's were trash. They were underpowered, cantankerous, and some never saw 10 MPG. You rarely see any at car shows unless they were resto-modded and if you watch some of the auctions on TV, even a nice example doesn't draw much $. GM also had the market cornered for some ugly cars, and this was a perfect example. When I look back at some of the junk they made 30 years ago it's a wonder it took so long for them to go T.U.

can't you just see where pontiac got the idea for the aztek!!! in the late 70's GM made 2 different v6's the odd fire and the even fire.the odd fire's shook like hell.the even shook like the devil.both of buick decent.the even fire went on to become the gnx grans sport turbo engine which made wicked power.so don't knock em too hard.
