Best to drive a mile or 2 & get off a freeway. Emergency lanes are not the place to change tires or anything else !!!

In the bay area I often see someone who has had a flat and pulled into the *left* emergency lane.

I'm not sure what passes through their minds when they decide to pull over there, but I do know they are going to be there for awhile.

I've changed tires on the interstate, but only when there was no exit for miles. But I got way off the road as far as I could. Still, it's only by God's grace I survived anyway.

Not changing a tire soon can also get you (and others) killed, if the tire blows out.

I've seen one too many times when the driver would keep driving (missing exit after exit) with a flat tire, despite repeated attempts to warn him or her of the flat tire.

Scary. I've luckily only had to change tires a block away from my house, when I hit a nail just on the way to Costco to get new tires.

You simply drive at less than 20mph in the emergency lane with your hazard flashers going.

You are probably also that guy who runs out of gas just close enough to coast into the station.

And at best you've got one or two attempts at a regular feeling brake pedal.

I had to change a tire on the strip between the left lane and an incoming (from the left) on ramp in Akron during afternoon rush hour. Hit a grey chunk of 4x4 that blew out my left front tire immediately and bent the living daylights outta the rim. There was no getting across 4 lanes of traffic to the right side breakdown lane, and the left was cement wall right up to the little strip I managed to stop in.

I don't think a Nascar pit crew could have been any faster under those circumstances. The worst part was the spare being under our (4 people) luggage in the trunk.

Captain Obvious says: "perhaps we should all periodically check the condition of our tires. I check tire pressure from time to time as well as tread depth/condition. A blown tire can ruin your day."

I typically look over my tires when fueling up. Got a couple minutes to kill, may as well do something useful.
