door dings...GRRRR
 

this didn't happen to my mercedes, but to my father's BMW 528i(awesome car BTW). I have always kept the car waxed and looking good, partly b/c there is a chance i can take it out then, and mainly because the car will be given to me in a couple years(i'll be trading him for the SD, which i will talk him into keeping in the family so i can buy it off him later :D, ) On the bimmers rear right door, all of the sudden 3 BIG door dings appeared. Everytime i pull into the garage next to this otherwise PRISTINE sedan, they stick out like a sore thumb. If i ever catch ANYONE banging their door into mine, i will have some words with that person. now to talk padre into fixing them( shouldn't be too hard, he loves the car) Sorry, just needed to vent(and ramble i guess)...

As someone who always parks his car as far away from other cars as possible, door dings are my pet peve. Other than a small bit of rust on my 1977 300D, the only blemish is a 2" long scratch/ding that appears to be the result of a grocery cart.

While getting coffee at my Dunkin Donuts this AM, I parked in front of the store, with plenty of room between my car and the one along side. Good thing, the dingbat that got into the car next to mine slung her door open full, without looking, as she horsed herself in with her coffee and fist full of jelly donuts. Although you have to get used to this in NJ, I still have a hard time with people who feel and act like they are, or should be, the only people on earth.

Try this one on for size...my neighbor is a drummer. His parking spot is also right next to mine. Talk about a recipe for door dings! Have you ever seen someone try to load a set of drums into the backseat of a small nissan sentra?? I hate parking next to this guy. He comes lumbering up to the car, not even able to see around the huge bass drum he's carrying. Even if he doesn't throw his door open, he will probably knock it fully open while wrestling with all this drum equipment, if he doesn't actually scratch my car with some of it first. Whenever it looks like he might be loading equipment, I discreetly move my car as far over as I can to the car next to me (a BMW M3). The BMW owner once saw me doing it -- I started to explain, but he said he understood.

I'm particular too when it comes to parking any of the cars under my care. However, despite that, dings can't be avoided as this world is full of em fools. The 126 and 124, thankfully, has a hard body shell and the most that ever comes from a near ding would be paint chips. Still, its not very nice, but nicer than to have dings I suppose.

In order to avoid dings, I always park against a curb so that right off the bat, there can only be one car next to me to ding me. Also, I get as far over to the curb as possible in order to leave plenty of room next to me. It usually ends up working out so that even if someone were to park next to me and swing their door full open, their door wouldn't even reach me. They would have to park into my spot in order for their doors to reach.

I almost always do the same thing as mentioned above, as does my dad. he has NO CLUE where the dings came from, and i know it's not from the garage in our house, b/c i park next to him and A. I ALWAYS open my door carefully, and B. my door wouldn't have hit in those spots. Also, if possible, i park with the curb to the right of my car, there is always a driver but not always a passenger, therefore my chances of getting "dinged" are much less that way. thanks for calming me down...

Why can't home builders design garages with AMPLE room between cars??? I have to wedge the ML and SL to the extreme corners of each wall in order for the 300E to park in the middle with a comfortable door-opening radius.

Otherwise !DING!...daughter opens the rear door on the 300E and dings the ML, !DING!...the SL door hits the window sill on the garage, !DING!...ML door hits the mirror on the 300E, !!SCRAPE!!... parked the ML too close to the wall and the plastic bumper scrapes against the aluminum ladder...

(Sigh), maybe I need a padded garage... :(

hmm, padded garage. You could actually put foam padding where the door would hit the window sill, and they make big, flat "boat bueys(for lack of a better word) that dangle down so that door dings cant happen. If you got creative you could probably solve your problem.

Remove those dings
 

Just this last weekend I had a guy remove a ding from the front right fender of my 300SDL. He used the paintless dent removal system. Man, what a difference! You can't tell the ding ever existed. He worked on the fender for about an hour and now, no more ding.

I had never heard of this type of process until about a few months ago, then I saw another friend's 300SD had a ding removed from it. You guys ought to try it because it really works.

Try parking in a highschool parking lot that has no parking lines. At the beginning of the year my car has 0 dings in it. Now it has 7. It's the most annoying thing ever. The worst part being that I have no clue who is doing it. I wish I could buy a different car to drive to school but I don't have nearly enough money for that. How much does it cost to have the paintless dent remover done? Also I'm probably going to have it repainted in about a year. Should I just wait until then to have the dents removed?

"Yes, Your Honor, I understand the charges against me.....but....He dinged the door on my Mercedes!...."

That should be an admissible defense if you're ever in court for aggravated assault on a fellow parking-garage user!

This weekend, my daughter's friend whipped the door open on the 300E and the corner of it landed squarely on the ML rear fender lip.:rolleyes:...that makes four dings total on the SUV...two on that same fender!

I guess I'll wait until the spring, and I'll get all the dings taken out of the ML.

Tsk tsk... kids, gotta watch your daughter's friends :)
