Mercedes T 80 Land speed record car
I bought a copy of the latest Vintage Motorsports last night. It has a pretty extensive article on the Mercedes T 80. this car was built just prior to the outbreak of ww2 and never run or completed. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
To harness the power of the 27 Liter Aero engine he provided four driven rear wheels, all sprung with swing axles. Each wheel was nearly 4' tall. The front suspension was parallell trailing arms.....think VW beetle air cooled with torsion bars. The wheels were contained in streamlined pods and there were two large wings which provided downforce. The design speed was 465 MPH. It was hidden away for the duration of the war and survives to this day but was never completed or run. Impressive.
