Guys In Marin County, Congratulations

Statistically, Marin County, CA May Be Your Best Bet

Dr. Ali Mokdad, who heads the research team that prepared the report, said Marin life expectancy rates are high and getting higher because most residents don't smoke, aren't obese, are physically active and eat a healthy diet.

"The people in Marin decided to live healthier, and they are getting their reward for their lifestyle," Mokdad said. "That's something we'd like to see everywhere else."

I think the biggest factor is wealth and ability to pay for good food and care. Marin is one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Same goes for many well-to-do counties.

a "native" speaks

I was fortunate to grow up in Marin County from 0-18 years and lived there for one year when I was 28 again.

It has a mediterranean climate, and almost all white people.

It is super expensive to live there now but not so much so when I was a kid.

My memories are fond, and I still visit sometimes, but it sure has changed a lot. No more small towm friendliness, but the majority of people in the southern parts, closer to San Francisco are well educated and articulate.

A Mercedes Benz 450SEL was described as a "Mill Valley Volkswagen" back in the 1970's in Marin..

Same high divorce rate as everywhere else though.

During that period, life expectancy rates for Marin men increased from 74.6 years to 81.6 years while life expectancy rates for Marin women grew from 79.7 years to 85.1 years.
Best bet for what? Living past your useful life? Ability to spend more years in a nursing home or watch yourself being less and less able? Thanx but no thanx. At 45, your body is nowhere near what it was at 20 on an average. Eyesight and hearing is not getting better. Barring a radical change, you won't get better aging unless you were a 500# obese guy who lost weight to your recommended BMI or something.

Higher life expectancy generally means better health till later in life.

Again, to what end? You might have better health in life like you say even up to the last minute. So what? Convince me you believe your body at 80 will be as good as it was at 20, 40 or 60.

So by your logic everyone should take a .45 cal lollipop at age 30, since life is no good after that? When should be the cutoff?

And if your body (in Marin County) is as good as at 75 as the body of someone in Bumpass County, West Virginia is at 60, what's wrong with that?

aklim's focus is centered on youth and "the body" . . . so little on experience and "the mind."

Nonsense. Why use a 45 when a 22 will do. No need to make a bigger mess and the end result is just the same. Besides, there are more painless and pleasant ways to achieve the same result. Technically, IIRC, after 20, your body declines but the rate of drop is slow enough you won't notice it for a while.

I'm personally NOT interested in past 65 based on my body decline trajectory.

And I know my body at 50 is going to be better than some obese teenager too but that is kinda comparing apples to oranges.

"The mind" as in what sense? Your brain structure is going downhill after 30 or so. Without the body to carry your brain, you are going to have to be dependent on someone else. How would you like to be like Dr Hawkings or what some nurses refer to as "Talking Heads"? I have NO desire to be a ward of the state or anyone else. Hence my specification in my living will that should I be disabled (blind, crippled or insane), I am to be put into hospice.

Regardless of your living will, you don't get to go into hospice if you're disabled but otherwise healthy. You can be put into some kind of home, but it'll be on your dime. Hospice is usually cost free, carried out in the home, and is for those not expected to live past 6 months.

Not sure of the exact term but I would have it refuse all sorts of medical care with only pain relief allowed. What would the term be? Just curious. I know it does say that no medical care and life sustaining measure is to be administered in the event of any disabilities. Only water and pain meds

Just throwing this our there, I got passed by a 70ish year old guy on my road bike today, and I could not keep up with him despite drafting for a bit. Its all in how you treat yourself. Despite my own health issues (we all have em) I'm aiming to crank until I'm at least 75. I imagine my area isn't too much unlike Marin County though (ridiculously wealthy).
