Lost An Engine Due to a Bird Strike
Pilot's Voice Amazing, Sounds Like He's Ordering at a Drive Thru
The voice of the Delta Air Lines captain on Flight 1063 on Thursday sounds beyond calm as he informs air traffic controllers: "Aaaand Delta 1063 has had an engine failure on the right engine, declaring an emergency due to a bird strike." |

A classic example of media hype.
What, exactly does this commentator expect from the pilot? Should he get emotional and start screaming into his radio? If this commentator ever bothered to listen to the tapes of US Air 1549, he might have a case for excessive composure. That fellow lost both engines due to birds. He was also just as calm and professional as this fellow. FWIW, the moron ought to realize that a B-757 flies just fine with one engine and his declaration of an emergency is simply a formality to return to the airfield expeditiously. I hate the media. Bunch of lying, hyping, douchebags. On any specific topic that I have any knowledge, I can categorically state the media lied and or hyped the story. I can only conclude they do it on everything. |

Is it wise to have an airport near a wetlands filled with waterfowl?

It's amazing how Robust these engines are though, considering the precision part standards and amount of crap can get sucked through them they keep on truckin for the most part.

You'd be all the more amazed if you knew the stresses and the speeds that they suffer during every takeoff. I'm astounded that the new engines can go 25,000 hours before they come off the wing. Some can manage over 10,000 cycles as well.

I can imagine, but if you feel like it I'd kinda like to know for sure. the amount of power needed to move those jets around is pretty neat to see in motion

Any anomaly in the disc, the slightest crack or discontinuity in the forging, will eventually cause the disc to explode. There are several examples including the United DC-10 that crashed in Sioux City and the Delta DC-9-80 that killed a woman sitting right next to the fan inside the passenger cabin. It's a very complex business whereby there is no margin for any mistakes. |

I've got a 15 lb. blade from the engine on a B-767 sitting on my bookshelf in the office. Manufactured out of a solid block of titanium. Talk about some serious cash................
