State funds shortfall solution?

About a year or so ago someone posted the question of how will the states deal with their debt problem. I said they would issue new Bonds to cover their shortfalls and worry about how to pay them off later.

I was roundly lambasted by those who pointed out that I did not know the difference between debt and bonds and blah, blah, blah. My response was that the question was: How will the states deal the debt and not how will they get out of debt.

Anyway.... The State of Oklahoma just announced it needs a few hundred million to pay its' bills, so they are going to issue new bonds. This is how one state, in which both Houses and the Governor are all Republican, chose to deal with its' debt.

So the question now is: How do states find the money to pay their bills? Oklahoma's plan was to get rid of the state income tax and replace it with taxing Vet benefits, Social Security, property currently exempt from taxes because it is owned by a person over 65 and raising real estate taxes by 800%. Oddly enough this did not go down well with Vets, people over 65 and anyone who owns a house, so that plan was scrapped.

Any suggestions? The Ledge members in OKC need all the help they can get, so please be creative.

Thanks!

I agree, they should also stop ALL funding for museums and the arts etc.... stuff like that should be funded by the private sectors. The government has NO business funding programs that only benefit a small amount of tax payers.

Museums and the arts probably bring in more tax $ in sales tax from tourist spending than they cost. Besides, they're educational tools -- what's wrong with funding education?

How about the f**king pigs in Washington stop with their idiotic wars and security spending, cut Federal taxes, so states can pick up the slack by raising taxes enough to balance their budgets.

How about equal percentage from all of the above? Only fair way to do it - screw everyone equally.

Oh come now, you're not that naieve are you? Just like the feds, every state budget has it's share of pork projects, earmarks, and otherwise totally useless spending items.

Four hundred million shortfall? Hell, that's pocket change compared to what most other states are facing. Even without doing away with any of the BS spending I mentioned, $400 million total in cuts spread across the entire state budget doesn't sound like a show-stopper.

Since "cuts" these days are actually just a decreased increase, hold spending level for a period of time. No cuts, no increases. Everybody wins or loses, depending on one's perspective.

Or they could sell naming rights for major throughways and exits. Sonic's OK State Highway 1 or Dollar Thrifty Automotive Exit 27, for example.
