How can you possibly come up with an excuse?

I think this relationship is over. There is no way he can make an excuse which will save his bacon.

Reminds me of an incident about 20 years ago near here.
A rather simple guy was out camping beside a large lake so he could be up early for the start of duck season. He had consumed a large amount of beer.
I the middle of the night he woke & thought he saw something move at the other end of his tent. Thinking it maybe a snake, he shot it. He blew all his toes & 1/2 his foot off. He was too drunk to realize that the movement was him wriggling his toes.
