When the police are minutes away

Georgia Grandmother Foils Robbery By Getting Into Shootout With Suspects
April 24, 2012 9:42 AM

Lulu Campbell, robbery, shootout MACON, Ga. (CBS Atlanta/AP) – Authorities in Georgia say a grandmother foiled a robbery attempt by two armed men by getting into a shootout with them, injuring one man.

Police told The Telegraph that Lulu Campbell just dropped off her grandson at her daughter’s house early Saturday morning when someone demanded money outside her car, threatening to shoot her.

“(The suspect) shouted, ‘Give me the (blanking) money and open the (blanking) door!’” Campbell told The Telegraph, describing her ordeal. “I said, ‘Oh my God, somebody is going to rob me.’ I said, ‘Baby, you’re going to kill me anyway, so I don’t have to open it!’”

Campbell says the man fired at her, missing. The 57-year-old fired back, striking him in the chest. Her truck sustained eight bullet holes in the hood, one in the grill. Both front side windows were destroyed. The second man fled after she shot at him.

“I thought that the only way to protect myself was to run him down,” she told The Telegraph. “Otherwise, he would have gotten away.”

Campbell, who owns convenience stores and gas stations, always is armed.

“I’m very nervous,” she told the paper. “I carry a gun all the time.”

Police say 32-year-old Brenton Lance Spencer has been hospitalized and was charged with aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery. The other suspect, 30-year-old Dantre Shivers, remains at large.

I love that. Reminds me of an incident that Paul Harvey told about years ago. An 84 year old woman had a man break into her home. He attached her and she fought back. The man decided to forget it and leave, however, she was not finished. Somewhere in all of this she put an metal bucket over his head. Once both of them were outside she began to throw rocks at his head. She continually hit him in the head. When the police arrived they were impressed with her throwing ability. When she was questioned on how she had such skill she replied that she taught her grandson to pitch a baseball. The man was found at a local hospital emergency room.

That's great! I have always believed that if criminals think someone MAY be armed and prepared to fight back, that is a much more effective deterrent to crime than the possibility that they MIGHT get arrested, and MIGHT possibly go to jail.

Faultless logic.

But for the would-be vics, it sounds like an unpleasant way to have to live.

Take a country like Mexico who has the some of the most strict guns laws around and see what happens. The drug cartels KNOW that the public is not armed and they can do what they want. Same thing for the Nazis. They knew it would be easy for them to whatever they wanted because the general populace was unarmed through strict laws enacted before the Nazis came to power.

I think in most cases if you shoot someone with a firearm and the police show up and you claim self defense or whatever, the likelihood is pretty strong that you are going to get tangled up with Courts and lawsuits over the incident for a long long time, and even if you are totally in the right, it is going to cost you a huge amount of time and expense.

Does that mean that grannies in the UK and Japan are in danger of extinction due to lack of self defense weapons?

Australia too !!
We have strict laws. No hand guns for members of the public. You are not even permitted to carry a pocket knife unless you have a good reason (not defensive).
It doesnt deter the criminals from having guns & knives though.

I can say since the "outlawing" of private ownership of firearms in the UK(Well you can still own them but they must be stored in such a manner you are better off with a cricket bat) the amount of Violent crimes has increased exponentionally.

Same as down under. Hey Layback40 need your opinion!!
