Welcome to my world. Since I'm the "young guy" (aging company), I'm apparently the go-to person for stupid stuff like that...its amazing how illiterate some people are, more amazing they still have jobs considering how integral to just about any office position these skills are.

Thought about that. Middle aged African American woman. She stood behind me while I sat in her chair and looked through her f'd-up files to find the correct doc to attach. No hand on the shoulder, nothin'.

I ain't young, early 40's. This person is maybe 50?

Yes, I wonder how she can effectively do her job (she's a a chemical dependency counselor). We need to use MS-Office on a daily basis!!

This is a new job, I left my old job on great terms (door is always open) which had a much more professional "grade" of counselor. I think we all had master's degs. I was looking for a new challenge, so now I'm dealing with idiots.

Idiot? I know of a very smart and known surgeon who only used e-mail via his secretary till recently. Seriously good guy -- he just preferred to keep up with his field and spend time with his family to dealing with computers.

Part of the job description is "proficiency with MS-Office applications". She's an idiot and so are those who hired her (who aren't the currents supervisors). Union may play a part in this as well, which I'll be forced to join. The teamsters.

I deal with them all day long in my job. I call them "toaster operators". They insert bread, push one button and expect toast. Any deviation from this outcome results in call to IT. I have been all over HR about decent testing of MS skills pre-employment. They claim they are, but we keep getting these folks.

Or go cloud? "It's just like your GMail at home." On second thought, that would probably result in 500 calls to support whenever Google Apps' (or whoever's) interface changed slightly.

Discrimination suits have folks leery of pre-employment testing and it's difficult, if not impossible, to get a true reference from a previous employer anymore due to legal ramifications. This is the new world we operate in.

We started using a temp agency with a trial basis-to-hire agreement and essentially use them to do the pre-hire and competency testing for administrative employee needs. If someone doesn't work out, we send them on their way and have the agency send another one. Sales rep and sales manager needs have been filled strictly through word-of-mouth within the industry. It's just not worth the headache of posting and weeding out candidates anymore.

I think she likes you and wants you to rub your chest on her back while you guide her mouse.

Several years back a senior administrative assistant (she'd been there about twenty years) where I was working called our help desk and I drew the call. She said she couldn't open pictures.

We were in the middle of a project rolling out Windows XP and Office 2003 and one of our images did have an issue where we had to change a registry key to allow pictures to open.

I got up to her office and as I often do I asked her to show me what she was doing.

She proceeded to open Microsoft Word, whereupon she clicked File>Open and navigated to the location where the picture was, then she chose the jpg.

I looked at her, trying to mask the amazement in my face and explained that Word wasn't really designed to open pictures. I then asked her what happened if she just opened the picture by itself and she gave me a puzzled look and asked, "How do I do that?"

I asked her to start Windows Explorer, whereupon she opened IE. After we got that shut down, I then suggested "My Computer".

Eventually I got her to navigate to the same folder she'd gone to in Word and asked her to double-click the picture.

It opened just fine.

She looked at me as if I were a wizard and said, "I didn't know you could do that!"

My real surprise was that she could manage to drive her car home after work ... since she probably used her house key to try and start the car.

This one isn't, but the nurse sure is.

Yesterday she said, "Oh you shaved your beard? You still look handsome".

This, a super cute younger woman. I think it's inapporopriate to be that foward, but that's me. I was speechless. Then again, maybe she was paying me an innocent compliment and I'm reading too much into it.

I dunno. I attach files on almost on a daily basis. It's part of the routine. How does she get by? Maybe prints them out and drops them into the employee mailbox?
