Would-Be Copper Thief ‘Extremely Grave’ After He’s Shocked And Catches On Fire « CBS Los Angeles

Quote:

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — A would-be copper thief was gravely injured early Saturday morning when he attempted to steal copper wiring from a live Edison vault, according to authorities.
Witnesses told CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Melissa Maynarich that the man could be heard screaming in agony.
Jeff Grammatico was across the street from the substation when he said, “I heard a boom.” He added, “It made me jump from one side of the room to the other.”

33 kV? Unidentifiable? If the guy survives, he'll probably wish he didn't. Not a joking matter.

That's happened a few times around here, I remember not too long ago a guy was killed by trying to steal an electrified 3rd rail.

catmandoo62 05-06-2012 07:15 PM

saw an article awhile back of a guy that had a brilliant idea to use one of those tree trimmers with the long poles to steal wires.too bad he didn't use a fiberglass pole

kerry 05-06-2012 07:16 PM

It says he hasn't yet been 'charged' with a crime.

catmandoo62 05-06-2012 10:35 PM

33kw definately "charged" him

A year ago, in Baltimore, we had a rash of street light poles stolen--the 40foot ( or so) long ones.

There are whole neighborhoods in Detroit where the street light poles were stolen, along with the underground cable.

I think they took it to another country and installed it :D

Definitely a Darwin nominee.

As Darwin's Corollary to Murphy's Law states, "You can't fix stupid".

Or as Bill Engval put it, "Here's your sign" - in this case self-illuminating.:D

Well this one confused me.
I clicked on the link expecting to read about a German thief.
A nationality well know for enjoying a beer.
Then I saw Worcester County, Salisbury and Snow hill district court and thought, what are German cops doing investigating a robbery in England.
Eventually I looked at the banner at the top of the page and realised it all happened in the USA.
