Met him once...
I shot an interview with him for CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt back in the late 1980's and he was a nice guy.
His home in Ridgefield CT was loaded with Mickey Mouse figurines and the walls were covered with original Windsor McKay billboard art (McKay made a living as a commercioal illustrator using his Pixies and Imps in poster art for Farm Machinery) and some original sketches by many illustrators. I hope his colletion ends up in Public hands, it is very impressive. He seemed to have an inner sadness, which I think came from his relationship with his Father, and also his fear of being "outed" (he felt it would affect the acceptance of his childrens books-this was said off camera as an aside). He was just starting to work on operatic versions of the Nutcracker and reviewing the costumes for "Where the Wild Things Are" stage version. I have 2 of his books he signed for my nephews, I intend to give them to my Grand Nephews for Xmas this year. |
