Has anyone used budget rental "street fleet"?

reservable car rental | rental car types | Budget Rent A Car

budget has this interesting reservable cars program.

I will be going to a wedding in Atlanta GA in the fall with the GF, and what lies directly between me and there is the blue ridge parkway.

I like the idea of being able to specifically reserve and rent a corvette. :D
I am the guest of the GF ,and she is not interested in renting an econobox and puttering down there since she will be driving the majority of the time, she originally wanted to rent a grand marquis as a good highway car.

anyone used this rental deal? Some interesting types, including a mini cooper, a couple BMWs, a mustang, ect.

I've used Budget "normal" several times and I have never had any trouble with the company. I have, however, on each occasion bought as much insurance as they would sell me. That is possibly how I have avoided any unpleasant "that's a scratch" arguments...

Several rental firms in the UK went through a phase of being super picky when you brought the car back and if you didn't have the extra insurance you got stiffed. I've read (in the motoring section of an English newspaper) that the same racket is going on in Italy... OK this European information isn't really all that specific I know but my point is that if you can reduce the come back with a rental company then that can only be a good thing in my opinion.

ive used budget plenty of times as well, i usually deny the extra insurance as a scam for any rental with any company, probably different in Europe I guess. My personal car insurance will cover rental cars. usually I end up renting cheapest/most economical, and that ends up being a tinny kia rio, or tinny hyundai elantra.

Whats interesting about this, is that you usually never get to reserve a specific model, and none of them very fun, unless you are in a specific destination where you can rent a wrangler with a beach sticker ect.

Its always such and such car, or similar. Half the time, I get the "or similar". :D

I've rented a few of the special collection cars from Hertz and Budget. A Shelby, Audi A4, GLK350. Memorable drives in California, so the extra charge was worth it.

hertz does it too?

excellent, need to research.

The idea is we want to drive all 469 miles of the blue ridge parkway in VA on our way down to atlanta, which should be a heck of a memorable drive.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is spectacular. But after about 100 miles at 35 MPH, it all looks the same. You may want to have an alternate route planned you can join mid-Parkway in case you get bored and just want to finish the drive and start partying in Atlanta.

this is why I suggested my 86 jetta diesel as the travel vehicle, since 35 mph is what it can do for maximum fuel efficiency. :D

That was rejected, no AC, and "economy at the expense of comfort, no thanks"

Looks like we can jump over to 85 easily from a bunch of points in case we get bored. Ill have to see what she says, I have driven the entire coastal Highway 1 down CA, from start to finish just to do it, and didn't get bored, but I was on my own.

I've heard about this type of service. Never had a chance to do it. I wonder what are the going rates today?

lol, I already suggested something like this, but it was more like-

Lets buy a couple old honda motorcycles and do this. small enough we can park both in my van, get to the top of the parkway, and zip down there. :D

at 35mph, even a 250cc would be a blast. I wish I still had my 700VTC Shadow.

JB3 05-16-2012 09:22 AM

I looked into pricing, and its not cheap. :D obviously.

Another small issue is we can't get any hot cars near us, we'd have to drive up to Boston, or down to NYC. Locally best cars we can rent are towncars or grand marquis.

As a tentative price comparison, it was like 850 bucks to rent a mustang out of Boston, and about 400 to rent a marquis out of Providence, where I can take the bus down to the airport in about 15 minutes.

Hmmm

"Additional days are only $1300.00!" :D

That sounds like fun, but if I had enough disposable cash to be able to rent one of these exotics, id probably already own something worth driving down there, other than an 89 chevy, 86 VW, and 74 MB, one of which runs. :D

Ill ask the GF to spring for this. "if you loved me, you'd rent us a 560hp V12 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 Spyder."
