Help me replace my 85 500SEL
I am thinking about a early to mid 90's 190 or a late 80's (87 and up) 300DT.
Can anyone offer opinions or experiences with these cars? Thanks, Ray |

the 90's 190e were pretty good cars.
The 300DT, w124 are also good cars. Both are cars that I would drive myself. Sorry I can't help you on any mechanical information, btu from what I have read, those cars are very good. If you want a small car, go for the 190, they are small and fit into tight parking spaces with ease. The 300dt is a slightly bigger car, and is very nice feeling. The 190 has some more aftermarket upgrades available than the 300, but you can still do upgrades to the 300. Suspension would be the best upgrade for it and so would wheels and tires. Painting out the panels so they are color matched also looks great on both cars. Either way, I recoomend looking for one with full maintenance records, and as low a mileage as possible within yoru price range. So I take it your car was a total loss byt he ins co? That really bites. My father had a tire shop pickup his jag once, and they crashed it. my dad sold the car tot he person who they crashed into. How is that for a weird situation? Alon

I concur with Ashman. I think both of them are good cars.
I have read posts that one of the techs, I think MB DOC, suggested only buying the last year or two of the 190 series. Why? I don't remember. If you do a search, you may find out. I've used the search function many times, but I struggle with it. The keyword I enter is either so vague that I get a million unrelated threads, or it is too specific and I get no matches...

What do you know about Jaguars?
I know, I know, not as good as a Mercedes but I've seen some nice XJ6's (1991 - 1994) for between $5k - $8k. Some still have bumper to bumper warrantees. Any thoughts? Ray |

I love the styling of Jaguar's and have salivated over owning one.
The pre-81?? used Lucas wiring, which should be avoided. They depreciate like crazy so are a good used car value, but I don't believe they hold up as well as a Mercedes. People complain about the price of parts on MB's, but the trade-off is superior engineering. You get what you pay for. With Jaguar you get high parts cost and questionable engineering...

Don't Get Me Wrong...
But just how old are you? And just how deep are your pockets? Most of us here have already gone through our "Brit car phase". If you haven't then you might just have to get it out of your system.
You seem awfully anxious to buy a car before you even know what the insurance company will pay you for the one you lost. I know, I'm no fun and I'm being a wet blanket and raining on your parade, but remember not to count your chickens before they hatch. This Jaguar up for auction closes in 5 days. Will you have the resources to purchase and take delivery on an $8,000 car by then? Including shipping? My best advice is to slow down, and take it easy. Look around by all means, but don't start shopping until you know what your budget will be. And remember that Jaguars are high-maintenance beasts and not nearly as DIY as Mercedes...

Thanks for the reality check!!
I'm in my mid 30's wife, kids, house, etc. I am pretty confident that I will collect a fair amount for the negligent destruction of my property. I *know* I will get another MB, I'm just looking at Jags for fun. Ray Last edited by raymond3; 02-17-2002 at 10:53 PM. |

I'm not sure what you mean by 300DT. Do you mean a 300TD wagon? If so, the last year of the US diesel wagon was 87 (and only year of US w124 diesel wagon). If you mean a 300D sedan (turbo diesel) the 3.0 liter 6 cylinder ended in 87. The new 2.5 liter five cylinder (300D-2.5) started in the early 90's in the mid size "e" body car. As for the 190 body, 1987 was the only year for the Turbo 190D. Many none turbo diesel powered 190's were built in the previous years. |

If I May...
There are a lot of people who (incorrectly, in my opinion) call the 300D, a 300DT, for Diesel, Turbo.
In fact, many incorrectly call any turbo charged diesel a DT (Diesel-Turbo), TD (Turbo-Diesel), or even a D-TD (Diesel Turbo-Diesel?). I have even heard people say that Mercedes reps use these designations when speaking to customers over the phone. In my view, the only correct suffixes for the diesels are D, CD, SD, SDL, and TD. Here's some accurate model breakdowns: http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/mercedes-diesels.html and http://www.ditmire.com/mercedes_primer.html

300 D Turbo
Yep, I incorrectly called it a 300DT when I was talking about a 300 series like the one in this add:
1987 300 Turbo Diesel I hope that comes through. Ray |
